Lose Weight and Get Healthy with a Pedometer

Chris Radtke
Whether you want to lose weight to simply look good in a swimsuit, to be healthier, or both, a pedometer can help. People spend a lot of money for treadmills, exercise bikes and gym memberships. Is it necessary? Could a cheap pedometer be all you need to begin to lose weight?

Using a pedometer can be a very helpful and easy part of a plan to lose weight. If coupled with other activities and methods, you can lose weight and become healthier. These are some of the ways that a pedometer can help you lose weight.

A pedometer helps you create a fitness goal

There is an incredible amount of walking plans out there to help you lose weight. The majority of these plans recommend that you walk 10,000 steps per day. This is a very good amount. But, don't fixate on the number. Create your own goal, and stick to it whether its 9,000 steps or 15,000 steps per day. Use a pedometer to keep accurate track of your number of steps.

I would recommend that you wear the pedometer a couple of days without doing any extra exercise. This will give you a baseline of your activity level and will help you set an appropriate goal. Generally, I find that I wind up around 3,000 - 4,000 steps on a normal day. So, now I know that if I increase to 10,000 steps per day that will be two to three times the number of steps I normally take.

A pedometer is a cheap and easy to use fitness booster

Pedometers are generally a very cheap and easy to use way to lose weight. There are not many items that you can purchase for $20 that will help you lose weight throughout the day. Even if you try it out and decide that a pedometer isn't for you, it's probably worth spending the money.

A pedometer constantly reminds you of your health

One of my biggest pet peeves is people who drive around a parking lot for eight hours trying to find a spot 20 feet closer to the store. There are sometimes reasons for this, but generally its laziness. And the same people probably spend twenty minutes on a treadmill later in the day. If you want to lose weight, try to lose weight all the time. Don't just set aside 45 minutes a day. Use those 45 minutes in addition to the rest of your day.

Wearing a pedometer will constantly remind you of your health and your fight to lose weight. You'll remember to take the stairs instead of the elevator. You may begin to park farther away... on purpose. There are an infinite number of ways to rack up steps on your pedometer. It can almost become an addictive game with some very nice health benefits.

It's not easy to lose weight. But, a pedometer can be very helpful. Try a pedometer in conjunction with a healthy diet, stretching, weight training, etc... This multi-method approach will help ensure that you lose weight and that you do it the right and healthy way.
