1. Whole Wheat Pita Bread
This food item is great for pizzas, sandwiches, and even as a flat bread appetizer. I whole pita pocket is a serving and the average price per serving is around .25 cents. Only one of these pita pockets contain 130 calories.
2. Canned Marinara Sauces
Most of your items you serve can always use a great sauce to top it off. Look for a healthy choice sauce when purchasing one, possibly organic which only has about 80 calories per serving of a half of cup for only .30 cents.
3. Canned Tuna
Served great with oven baked crackers, on sandwiches or even eat straight out of the can! A six ounce can contains two servings. Each serving will cost you about .60 per serving and only has around 70 calories.
4. Old Fashioned Oats
A great breakfast dish. You can either add cold or hot water to make cereal, which I love. However, there are so many other ways to make this low calorie food great. Add it to some low-fat or low-calorie yogurt. You could sprinkle some on top of fresh fruit. The possibilities are endless. A serving consists of half of cup of dried oats and it only cost about .20 cents per serving. With only 140 calories per serving, I am sure you will find many ways to add this delicious item to your diet!
5. Frozen Vegetables
You can also eat these lovely greens by themselves with some balsamic vinegar, but they also work well in stews and casseroles. One cup of frozen vegetables only cost about .25 cents and have only around 80 calories per serving. I know most people don't consider frozen veggies to be fresh, however, if you buy Green Giant frozen veggies they are picked at their peak times and then frozen for the most fresh taste you will ever enjoy.
6. Brown Rice
I have always been one to enjoy rice, and if it is not white then it is even better. I love to add it to my favorite meals, however, there are times where I will just cook some up and eat it by itself, maybe add a dab of soy sauce to it. A fourth cup of dry brown rice has only 170 calories to it and costs about ten cents per serving!
