Lose Weight, Save Money

One of the biggest excuses people use when explaining why they aren't trying to lose weight is, "It's just too expensive." What those people are assuming is that weight loss requires personal trainers, fancy gyms and expensive foods. However, those things aren't necessary when you're trying to lose weight. In fact, you can lose weight and save money if you avoid unnecessary costs and pay attention to what you're spending money on. These tips are tried-and-true ways to help you lose weight and save money.

1. Drink water. Stop paying for carbonated beverages, overpriced coffees and calorie-loaded juices. These things not only hinder your weight loss, they also cost you money. Take advantage of what comes out of your tap. If you need to, invest in a water filtration pitcher to get the chemicals out. You'll still come out ahead after the first month passes.

2. Check out the grocery store's ads. The biggest expense associated with losing weight is the food budget. The prepackaged, unhealthy options are usually much cheaper than the fresh produce or lean meats. However, stores regularly run specials. If you plan your meals around the grocery store's specials, your grocery bill won't take a hit and you'll be able to eat the healthy food you need to in order to lose weight.

3. Head to the library. This may be surprising to some, but libraries have an assortment of dieting books, cookbooks and guides to help you decide what approach to take. You can also check out the video or DVD section, since some libraries will have fitness selections available.

4. Get outside. Avoid gym membership fees or personal training costs by taking advantage of what's just outside your door.

5. Search your television guide. Some cable and satellite customers have access to fitness programs in their basic packages. Look for FitTV on your guide, or do a search on your television provider's website. These channels broadcast workouts you can record and do later, and have a large selection to choose from.

6. Go to YouTube. This popular video site has tons of videos of workouts or exercises, whatever your preference. From kickboxing, to step aerobics to kettlebell workouts. It's free, easy to access and you won't get bored.

7. Pack it up. Don't just pack your lunch, pack your snacks as well. Have a coffee addiction? Rather than picking something up, make it at home and take it with you. This allows you to control what goes in calorie-wise, and costs you cents rather than dollars.

8. Think small. Going out to eat? Eat a real portion size rather than the monster versions restaurants serve. Order a side or an appetizer rather than a main course.

9. Shop savvy. Need exercise equipment? Check out second hand sports stores, such as Play it Again Sports. Another option is Craigslist, where people and defunct fitness centers unload unwanted exercise equipment. If you're looking for apparel or shoes, search on eBay or look for coupon codes for your favorite brands.

10. Keep it simple. Diet and exercise journals help you track your calories and make sure you're staying on track. Rather than investing in an expensive journal, buy a notebook and a pencil. It's just as effective, and will save you well over $10.
