It is possible to lose weight with Tai Chi. You are probably thinking how could this possibly work? After all Tai Chi is just about doing some really slow movements. Well while it may not be the most aerobic of activities you can still lose weight with Tai Chi, and I'll explain how in the rest of this article.

If somebody is a bit overweight then learning Tai Chi can be a great way to begin turning the tide. I am not going to pretend that half an hour doing this gentle martial art will burn as many calories as running for the same amount of time, but there is more to losing weight than just burning calories. The great thing about Tai Chi is that practically anyone can begin to learn this art, and there is not too much risk of injury. Joining a class where you learn this technique can be the beginning of a path that leads to lifelong fitness and a healthy weight.

One great benefit of this activity is that it relaxes you and regular practice helps you deal with chronic stress. One reason why a lot of people overeat is that they have too much stress in their lives; they deal with this pressure by opening the fridge. Depression can also be another cause of overeating, and this too will be reduced by a regular practice. The fact that your mental health is improved is just one way that you will lose weight with Tai Chi.

When you practice this martial art it tones your body. The movements over time will cause you to increase your muscle mass. It won't be as dramatic as a few months with the weights, but the increase in the amount of muscle in your body is a great thing. Muscle burns more calories than fat so by increasing the amount of muscle in your body Tai Chi will also cause you to lose weight. If you practice for an hour a day this will mean you will burn about 200 calories a session; this will depend on your current BMI. Regular practice will also speed up your metabolism so that you will burn more calories this way as well.

As you can see Tai Chi can certainly help you reduce your weight, and keep it under control. Many people who attempt to lose weight completely ignore the psychological components such as their stress levels; something like Tai Chi is great for this.
