Anyone who has tried to lose weight before is familiar with the term "metabolism". Metabolism can be a mystery. We often hear about products that can help speed up metabolism or reasons why our metabolisms might slow down. There are a lot of factors that affect our metabolisms, but there are some things you can do to help maximize how your metabolism functions so that you can lose weight and improve your overall health outlook.

Your metabolism does begin to slow down about three percent every decade after you reach the age of thirty. This is caused by a decrease in your overall muscle mass. If you work to maintain your muscle mass, you may be able to minimize this decrease in metabolism. Other causes of this decrease in metabolism are hormonal changes as you age. If you work out regularly and make sure that strength training is a part of your exercise regimen, you should be able to mitigate the slowing of your metabolism.

To find out how your metabolism is currently functioning, you may want to consult your family doctor. He or she may have equipment to test your current metabolic rate through your breathing. Another way to determine your current metabolic rate may be available through your gym or personal trainer.

Many people notice a significant slowing of their metabolism and wonder what may have caused this besides the normal aging process. Sometimes when people lose a significant amount of weight, their metabolism slows as a result. Your body may now be receiving fewer calories and in order to compensate, the metabolism slows down in order to keep its energy up. Additionally, if you are under eating in order to lose weight, your metabolic rate will slow down so it can be sure it is effectively utilizing the calories it has. Another reason your metabolism may have slowed down may be a thyroid issue. Other symptoms in addition to weight gain caused by thyroid problems are hair loss, constipation, hair loss and dry skin. If you think you may have a thyroid problem, consult your family doctor.

To help increase your metabolism, be sure you are consuming a minimum of 1,200 calories per day. To maximize your metabolism, you should eat at least three meals a day and never skip breakfast. If possible, try to eat five to six small meals a day. This will keep your energy elevated and help your metabolic rate work at its most efficient capacity. In addition, you should make sure you exercise regularly and include strength training in your routine. Even a 10 minute walk per day can help maintain or increase your metabolism. As with any healthy regimen, be sure to drink the equivalent of eight glasses of water per day. Making sure your body is hydrated will also increase your metabolism. The slightest amount of dehydration can make your metabolism slow down.

Incorporating small changes into your daily routine can help you increase your metabolism and reach your goals. Remember to exercise daily, eat small meals when possible, and keep your body hydrated to maximize your metabolic rate.
