Losing Weight Online

A Guide to Free Online Diet Sites

Many of us have spent countless amounts of time and money trying to lose weight. We buy shakes, prepackaged meals, go to meetings, read books, use expensive exercise equipment and do numerous other costly things in the pursuit of shedding our unwanted pounds. I personally, have found that having support while dieting is not only beneficial, but in a sense it can be crucial to your longterm success. There is something to be said for the accountability that diet programs tend to expect from their members and the sense of support they provide as a community. However, most diet programs charge membership fees that can be pricey and sometimes un-affordable to the average individual. In my own personal struggle to shed some unwanted pounds I have paid monthly fees to be in online diet programs, but more recently I have come across two programs that are free and on par with the paid programs.

Sparkpeople.com is a free online community that offers all the same services as it's paid competitors. Sparkpeople.com has menu plans with substitution capability and a printable grocery list to make shopping more convenient. Spark also has a section to keep track of exercise and a fitness section that is full of useful tips and strategies to help you keep track of your fitness goals along the way. The community on Spark is just outstanding! They have everything from forums to teams you can participate in to aid you in with your weight loss goals. Spark also has a planner you can use for appointments and important dates, which is just one of the many perks spark offers that is not directly diet related. In the same section as the planner they also offer an online journal, which can be helpful when dealing with all the emotions that come along with making major changes in your life. Most importantly though is the " My Spark " section and " Other Goals" section. These sections are personalized to you and help you keep track of your progress each week. In my opinion, what sets Spark apart from other dieting sites is the fact that their system is so personalized to each individual user making everyones program unique to their own personal needs. Even more unique to Spark is the small goals they allow you to set that aren't directly related to how heavy you are but are aimed at praising and celebrating small changes that will over time result in a overall healthier lifestyle. Sparkpeople.com is filled with so much more than I could ever remember, so it is definitely worth taking a look yourself.

Another great site for diet assistance is Lhj.com. This is the website for Ladies Home Journal Magazine. Lhj.com has many useful tools and tips that help you plan and stick to your diet. They track your weight and progress with regular weigh ins, and have daily weight loss tips for helping you along the way. Lhj.com has many useful calculators, like the weight loss calculator and body mass calculator that help you realistically set your goals. Like Spark, Lhj also has meal plans and recipe ideas that make it easier for you to chose the right foods and portion sizes. The dieting support on this site is excellent as well, although not as comprehensive as Spark. What I like most about Lhj.com is the comprehensive fitness sections. Which not only help you decide on a exercise routine, but also provides detailed tuturials that use slide shows and animated clips to illustrate the proper way to perform certain exercises. Lhj.com overall is a very informative and interesting site, that I visit often.

When choosing a program it is best to review all your options, and settle on a choice that meets your own individual needs. Personally, I have accounts with both sites and use a combination of the information from each of them. Losing weight can be emotional, stressful and life altering and having a program that supports you in all your needs can be the difference between success and failure.
