Lost Cat or Dog in Las Vegas? Check Kill Shelters First

Resources to Help You Find Animal Shelters that Might Have Your Lost Pet

Em Robbins
Las Vegas is a large metropolitan area with a substantial part of the population that moves in and out of town frequently to take advantage of the local atmosphere, often frequenting the local Las Vegas clubs. When a pet gets lost in a city you don't recognize, it can be hard to know what to do first. Las Vegas offers a variety of local online, offline and shelter resources that can help you find your lost pet. The first thing you must do when you lose a pet in Las Vegas is check the Lied Animal Shelter in person every day.

The Lied Animal shelter is the largest animal shelter in Las Vegas, and it is the animal shelter used by Clark County Animal Control. They are run by a non-profit organization called The Animal Foundation, which is dedicated to improving the humane treatment of animals through affordable health services, shelters, and human euthanasia services.

The Lied Animal Shelter is unfortunately a kill shelter, which means it puts unadoptable animals to sleep, so it is extremely important that you check Lied every day, since they are only required to hold lost animals for 72 hours before adopting them out or destroying them. Calling is not sufficient; Lied processes many, many animals and the staff is busy and cannot be expected to identify your pet. You can fax them information, but to make sure your pet is identified in time, go to the shelter.

Bring a picture and identification with you to prove that the animal is your pet. If you do not bring these things, they may not give you the pet. This is no exaggeration. Also, bring a credit card or some cash, because Lied charges 20 to 50 dollars for pet impound and ten dollars a day for every day your pet was held there. This figures out to about a maximum of $100. Though it does seem ridiculous and predatory that an animal shelter would hold your pet hostage with the threat of death, this is sadly the case.
