Summertime and visits to the beach just seem to go hand in hand. Who doesn't love strolling along the beach, collecting seashells, and building sand castles? Kids love to play and splash in the rolling waves and water.
Generally speaking, the beach is safe for children, no cars, and no where to get lost. Right? Not exactly. Enjoying your beach vacation requires some precautions to keep your kids safe from harm.
Most everyone has heard about Amber Alert. It is a valuable tool to alert people about a lost child or adult. Amber Alert has proven itself by using state-of-the art technology to report not only lost kids but tracking child predator's whereabouts.
The beach has hazards that need to be realized and preparations for sunburn and heatstroke must be considered. Be sure to apply sunscreen to your children's delicate skin. The sunscreen will protect them from painful sunburns, and build good skin-cancer avoidance habits.
Safety
Preparation is great, but you'll need to keep watch on your kids at all times. Kids may forget about or may not be able to read or understand signs posted about surf, dangerous undertow, or jelly fish warnings. So, you need to pay particular attention to what's going on in and out of the water. Teach your kids about the dangers that come with swimming and seaside enjoyment, and to never swim alone or without a lifeguard on duty.
Additionally, the beach area will likely be filled with people. Tragically, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, approximately 2,100 children are reported missing every day. Many abductions end without harm to the child, but many have tragic endings.
Unfortunately, the beach is a virtual haven for child predators. Once on the beach among hundreds of other children, your child may blend into the scenery and you can lose sight of them. Children need to be taught how to avoid dangerous situations and how to respond if/when they occur.
Teaching and reminding your children to avoid strangers might seem simple. But, not all strangers are predators. A predator can display a happy and innocent looking face, and seem absolutely harmless. They might even offer a piece of candy or a toy to a child as a way to begin communication and trust. They might offer to help your child build the most elaborate sand castle, or perhaps point out a dolphin playing off shore to the delight of you and your child.
But, no matter how we try to protect our children, sometimes children do get lost. Losing your child is any parent's worst nightmare. So, although the beach can be a fun and exciting place to visit, it is not hazard or danger-free.
