Lost Should Ditch the Flashbacks

Lee Andrew Henderson
Spoiler Warning! Well sort of, I'm not going to reveal anything that will ruin anything but the crew at Lost has announced that Episode 319 of Lost will have no flashbacks in it.

If you watch Lost you know the show loves their flashbacks. Every single episode focuses on one person and in addition to an episode where they are the centric character we also see a flashback to see more of their history. Now I haven't memorized every single episode of Lost but I believe this is the first episode that will not have a flashback.

My feelings about this are simple. Good riddance, get rid of the flashbacks. In the past there have been some great flashbacks. The first Sawyer flashback was outstanding. Mr. Eko's flashback was my favorite episode and Locke and Sayid always have good flashbacks.

Of course if we continue to have more flashbacks it's probably going to be less Locke, Sawyer, and Sayid flashbacks and more Jack and Kate flashbacks. No thank you.

I don't even care about flashbacks of the characters that have had good flashbacks anymore either. Do we really need to see Sayid torture another person? Do we need to see Sawyer con another person? Do we need to see Hurley have more bad luck? I think we've gotten about as much from the flashbacks as we possibly can.

There are a few exceptions of course. The Desmond and Penny situation could still use another flashback. Another Juliet flashback could provide some valuable information and certainly a Ben flashback would be welcome. Flashbacks of any new characters that are introduced are fine too. I don't really think we need anymore flashbacks of the original group though.

Plus if Lost spends less time on flashbacks that means they will spend less time on the present. I'm all for episodes that completely take place in the present time because that means we'll actually get farther in the story faster. Or maybe we won't, maybe they would fill up the extra time with interactions on the island, but that stuff is great too. Give us more Hurley and Sawyer interactions, give us more Sawyer and Jin interactions, give us more Sawyer and Claire and Aaron interactions. (can you guess who my favorite character is yet?) Any of those would be better than interactions between Sawyer and random guy in the past. So please Lost, make the no flashback idea a regular thing in Season 4.

I think the flashbacks will be important later on. Wath if the "Flashbacks" are actually the present. The bits of them on the island is the future. It may end with the cast deciding not to go on the plane at all. Or what they do in there past life wrong they must make up for it on the island. When they do they "Die". (E.G. Mr. Eko builds a church on the island like he was supposed to for his brother and he "died".

I like most of the flashbacks, gives us insight to why the person is the way they are. I do think they should have more episodes without them though.

On most shows, the nature of a character is establishd by what he/she does in the present as the story moves forward. We have come to suspect that on LOST, the reason these people were brought together is because of the character flaws each had in the past before they boarded flight 815. Furthermore, we are learning a little at time, that many of them crossed paths long ago before they ever met. Like when Jack met his former wife in the ER, she had been in an auto accident where Shannon's father was the other driver and died. These things are the essence of the plot. If we didn't have flashbacks, it wouldn't have the eerie plot!
