Ultimately this show started in season one with a discussion about backgammon and Locke attempts to explain it to Walt, telling him that there are two sides, light and dark, and that it has been like that for many years. So many aspects of the show have involved the contrasts between good and evil, light and dark-from the game to the stones found on Adam and Eve to Claire seeing Locke in a dream with a black and a white eye.
Even the characters over the years have shown subtle and obvious references to religion and God in general. Locke's mother tells of his immaculate conception, Mr. Eko uses a staff with a cross and bible verses on it and even in the others we see Eloise sacrifice Daniel knowingly for the good of the island, in reference to God and Jesus. You have to wonder how these incidents, along with many others, play into the religion component of the show.
One of the ways to look at it is in Jacob and the man-in-black. Their struggle at the end of season five and the start of season six so far shows us two very polarizing characters that live together but reflect a deep dislike for each other, and their discussions together reflect the conversation of God and Lucifer in the book of Job. Even looking at the man-in-black as Flocke (fake Locke) you see him feeling cornered and controlled by the actions of Jacob-he feels a need to escape and defy him, no different than the devil's feelings towards God.
This show has used so many references towards the ultimate discussion of good versus evil, the devil trying so hard to overtake God. But like the real world, I hope the show will reflect the truth that no matter how hard black smokie tries, he thinks he has defeated Jacob/God but finds out in the end that he cannot. And no matter how the characters may feel, Jacob had their best intentions in mind, and the powers of light do triumph over those of darkness, giving hope for faith.
