Having twenty characters or more in LOST, HEROES, or the 4400 really isn't the problem here. It's the writing. These shows are nothing compared to Marvel Comics X-men, which is basically what these shows are trying to capture. In my opinion, Marvel's story telling is much more interesting than these foolish shows. They concentrate on certain characters in a more reasonable and satisfying manner.
However, since every character in these shows seem to be representing a different human race, it reasonable to assume that Hollywood is targeting Europe more than the United States. Now, I'm not saying that I'm against that. Remember, I am an X-men fan. I'm simply saying that I think the writing and story structure would be better prepared and presented if Hollywood was targeting movie or TV savvy Americans.
