Lost Season 6 Episode 15 - Jacob's Unlikely Brother and Adam & Eve Revealed

Sherry Wight
Lost season 6 episode 15, entitled Across the Sea, focused on the history of Jacob and the man in black. The newest installment in the hit drama's final chapter shed light on how Jacob came to be the Island's guardian. Here's the play by play.

Lost season 6 episode 15 kicked off with a previously unseen woman floating among wreckage in the water. Moments later, we see her lying on the beach. She had long dark hair and is heavily pregnant. She wanders inland and finds a brook of water, which she drinks thirstily until a woman appears and asks, in what seems to be Latin, if she's injured. She helps the pregnant woman up. Later, she asks the woman her name, and she tells her it's Claudia. Suddenly, the pair speaks English. They talk about how they each got to the Island; the older woman says it always happens by accident. The woman encourages Claudia to stop asking questions. Then Claudia goes into labor. A son if born, and Claudia calls him Jacob. As the woman cleans Jacob, Claudia begins screaming once again and delivers a second baby boy. Claudia laments that she'd picked only one name. When the older woman lays the babies next to one another, Jacob lies peacefully but the other baby screams and cries. When Claudia asks to see them, the woman says she's sorry and then brains her with a rock. Repeatedly.

Years apparently pass, and a young teenaged boy - the man in black - finds something on the beach. He tells Jacob that it's a game as he sets it up, using black and white stones. The man in black asks Jacob if he wants to play, and he says yes. He tells Jacob that they can't tell their mother about the game because she'll take it away. Later, Jacob approaches his 'mother' (the killer) and offers to help her with her work. She asks what the boys were doing on the beach, and he says just walking, but she asks if he loves her and again asks what they were really doing.

On the beach, she approaches the man in lback and tells him that he's special. He asks if he can keep the game, and she says yes, and intimates that she left it for him. He suspects that it came from across the sea, but she tells him that the Island is all there is. They have an odd discussion about lineage and death. Later, the two boys chase a wild hog through the jungle. A pair of men spea it before they can, and the boys watch curiously from a hiding place. Moments later, the boys run to their mother and tell her about the men they'd seen. They're in a panic. She tells them that the other men don't belong here and that she and the boys are there for a reason. She won't tell them what the reason is yet. She blindfolds the boys and walks them through the forest. When the man in black worries over people hurting each other and asks if THEY can hurt each other, she takes off their blindfolds and tells them that she's arranged it so the two of them can never hurt each other. She shows them a bright light and tells them that it's their responsibility to make sure no one can find it. She worries that man will put out the light and extinguish the light everywhere. She says she can't protect it forever, and says that one of the two boys will have to do it.

Later, the boys play the game on Lost season 6 episode 15. The man in black tells him he can't make a specific move, and says that one day he can make up his own rules to his own game. Their real mother appears to the man in black, but not to Jacob. He runs off to follow her; when he asks why Jacob can't see her, she says "because I'm dead". She leads him to another place across the Island, and he sees a camp of humans. Claudia tells him that he came from across the sea like the people in the camp, and shares that she is his true mother.

After nightfall, the faux mother sleeps. The man in black wakes Jacob and tells him that they're going to leave for good. He tells him about the people and that they're their people. He tells them that their mother isn't their mother. Jacob gets very upset and starts beating on the man in black. Their faux mother shows up, and the man in black begs Jacob to believe him and to go with them, but Jacob refuses. She tells the man in black that he'll never be able to leave the Island, but he says he'll prove that he can one day. He walks off.

After daylight breaks, Jacob and faux mom sit on the beach. He asks if she'd killed his mother, and she says yes. She explains that the people were bad people and that she needed him to stay good. He asks if he's good, and she says yes. He asks why she loves the man in black more, and she says that she loves them in different ways. She asks him to stay with her and he says he will for a time.

Years pass and Jacob stands at a loom weaving. He asks his mother what she thinks and she says it's nice; she's just very tired. Jacob visits the man in black and the two play a game. Jacob says their mother never talks about him. Jacob says he wants to know if the man in black's people are bad; Jacob says they don't look bad, but the man in black has plenty of negative things to say. He calls them a means to an end and tells Jacob that he found a way off the Island. He hurls a dagger and it sticks to a stone figure. He asks Jacob to come with him, but Jacob doesn't want to because the Island is his home. He asks what he'll do when their mother dies and he says it won't happen.

Back at Jacob and his mom's camp on Lost season 6 episode 15, she asks what the man in black said to him. He tells her that he's says he's found a way off the Island. She goes to the camp and confronts the man in black in an underground cave where he tends a fire. She tells him that she's worried, and says he's found a way to access the light from underground. Mom is not a happy camper. He pulls a corner of rock form the wall and the light shines through, revealing a wheel. He plans to get off the Island by using a combination of the light and the wheel. He tells her that he has to go because he doesn't belong there. She hugs him and says she's sorry just before ramming him into the wall, apparently knocking him out.

Later, she approaches a sleeping Jacob and tells him that "it's time". They parade through the darkness together as she leads him to the light. She tells him that he's now in charge of protecting it. He asks what's down there, and she calls it the heart of the Island. She makes him promise that he'll never go down into the light, and tells him that the fate for doing so is much worse than death. She opens a bottle of what seems to be wine and chants as she pours a glass. She hands it to Jacob and asks him to drink it; she tells him that it's his turn to protect the Island. One day he'll have to choose his own. He resists, but she presses him and he finally takes the cup. After he drinks, she tells him that the two of them are now the same.

The man in black awakes alone on Lost season 6 episode 15. He finds that his work in the well has been completely covered over. He turns to see black smoke rising in the distance and finds his camp in flames and the people dead. He digs his game from the ruins and holds it to his forehead and cries in despair and frustration.

Jacob and his mother walk through the jungle as thunder claps. He notes that a storm is brewing and she sends him off for fire wood. She tells him to be careful. She approaches her camp alone and finds the man in black's game. She pulls out a black stone and a white stone and studies the black one. As she does so, the man in black shoots a spear through her chest and lies dying. He asks why she wouldn't let him leave, and she says it's because she loves him. She then thanks him and dies. He cries. Jacob reappears and angrily demands to know what happened. He beats the man in black, demanding to know what happened. Later, Jacob walks him through the jungle and the man in black reminds him that he can't kill him. Jacob says he doesn't plan to kill him as he throws him into the water in front of the light. The man in black floats into the cave and down into the light. Moments later, the black smoke emerges. Later, Jacob washes his face in a brook. He sees the man in black lying on some rocks, and runs to him. He strokes his head and is emotional. Moments later, he carries him through the jungle and brings him back to his camp. He finds the stones his mother had been examining and places them inside a pouch. We get a flashback to Jack discovering the pouch during season 1. Jacob lays the two bodies next to each other, and we get a flashback to season 1 when Locke remarked on their "very own Adam and Eve".

With little time left for the addition of new materials, the details revealed during Lost season 6 episode 15 were crucial. It amazed me that I'd never considered that the light and dark Jacob and Man in Black were brothers, when now it seems so obvious. This edition did much to make the man in black a more sympathetic character, and to confirm that Jacob was, in many ways, just a man. But how much of a man was the man in black; after all, Claudia noted to the man in black that Jacob could not see her because she was dead. Perhaps the more disturbing question is why could the man in black see her? So what else is in store? Tune in and see.
