Lost season 6 episode 16 opens as Jack awakens in the alternate reality, and goes into the bathroom. He sees a bloody spot on his neck and muses over it until his son enters and announces he's made breakfast. The son confirms that Jack will be at his concert, and Jack asks the boy if his mom will be there as well. He says yes, and asks Jack not to act weird. Claire enters, and they give her some cereal. She says she's feeling well. The phone rings, and someone from Oceanic claims that they've found his father's coffin. We see that Desmond is on the other end of the call.
Back on the Island, Jack works to treat Kate's bullet wound. Kate sadly tells Jack about Jin and Sun's little girl, and vows revenge against Locke. Jack agrees that Locke must die. Later, Sawyer stands on the beach watching remnants from the sub wash onto the beach. Hurley and Kate join him, and then Jack completes the group. He tells the other three that they need to find Desmond in the well, per Sayid.
In the alternate reality on Lost season 6 episode 16, Desmond watches John get out of his car at the school. Des starts his engine, and Ben shows up, claiming a citizen's arrest. Des gets out of the car and beats Ben; during the beating Ben has flashes of Des from another place.
On the Island, Ben leads Miles and Richard through the jungle in search of explosives. They find the campsite, and Miles begins acting strangely. Richard speaks for Miles, telling Ben that Miles is reacting to Alex. Richard says he buried Alex after he'd left. Ben remains detached as he thanks Richard and walks on. The trio enter Ben's old home and he opens the safe. They load their bags with C4, and then hear a noise outside. They find Zoe and Charles Widmore in the kitchen. Widmore calmly drinks a glass of water while talking with a frazzled Ben. Widmore sends Zoe out to clear out supplies, and then asks Richard what he's doing. Ben asks how Widmore got back to the Island, and Widmore tells him that Jacob invited him. Zoe calls Widmore in a panic; she sees Locke. Widmore tells Ben that they need to hide if they don't want to die.
In the alternate reality, Ben sits with a school nurse. John enters and asks what happened. Ben tells him that he saw the man who ran him down, and shares that the man said he was trying to get John to "let go". Desmond shows up to the police station and asks to see a detective. He sees Sawyer, and tells him that he was responsible for hitting John with his car and beating Ben. He puts Des in a cell, which happens to house Sayid and Kate.
Back on the Island, Jack and Sawyer walk through the jungle. Sawyer sadly asks Jack if he was responsible for the deaths on the sub, and Jack says no, but Sawyer looks guilty. Hurley and Kate lag behind; Hurley briefly sees young Jacob in the distance, and then turns and he's in front of him. Young Jacob demands some ashes, and then runs off with them. Hurley follows him, and finds older Jacob burning his own ashes in a fire. He tells him that when the fire runs out, he'll never see him again. Jacob tells Hurley to gather his friends because the end is coming.
On the Island, Locke leaves his boat and walks toward Widmore and the others. While Widmore tries to convince Ben to go with them, Ben resists and asks for their walkie talkies. He plans to just wait for Locke to arrive. Miles runs off with WIdmore and Zoe, while Richard offers to try to get Locke to leave with him. Ben watches as Richard waits for Locke. The black smoke appers and knocks Richard off his feet; Ben sits on a porch chair. Locke walks around the corner and pulls out a large knife as he sits down next to Ben. Locke asks Ben to kill some people for him, promising him the entire Island after he's left. Locke asks where he can find Widmore, and Ben tells him he's in his closet.
In the alternate reality, Ben sees Alex. She asks about his injuries, and she expresses concern for him. She insists on having her mom give him a ride home. Danielle gets out of her car and insists on giving him a ride, and on him staying for dinner. Later, after dinner, Danielle shares that Alex's father died when she was two, and tells him that he's the closest thing she's ever had to a father. Ben gets emotional.
On the Island on Lost season 6 episode 16, Ben leads Locke toward the closet. He opens it and goes inside, where he finds Widmore and Zoe. Ben apologizes to Widmore in his usual callous way. Widmore tells Zoe not to talk to Locke, and Locke immediately slashes her throat. Locke vows to kill Penny as soon as he leaves the Island unless Widmore tells him why he returned to the Island. Widmore tells Locke that he brought Desmond back to the Island because the guy was a "measure of last resort". Locke asks for more details, but Widmore refuses to say more aloud in front of Ben. As Widmore speaks, Ben shoots him. Locke tells Ben that he'd already gotten the info he wanted, and Ben asks if there are more people he'd like killed.
Elsewhere on the Island, Kate, Sawyer, Jack and Hurley approach Jacob by the fire. They can all see and hear him this time. Kate asks why their names were written on the wall, and Jacob says he's sorry. He says that he'll tell them why they were chosen and how to protect the Island if they'll sit with him and listen.
In the alternate reality on Lost season 6 episode 16, Jack sits at his desk typing. John visits, and asks to chat. John admires a photo of Jack's son, and then tells him the series of events that led him to come back to see him. He tells him about Des's most recent words: That he wants to "help him let go". He notes that Jack had said the same thing to him, and says that he thinks he's supposed to let Jack fix his spine.
On the Island, Hurley, Jack, Jate and Sawyer sit around the fire with Jacob. They ask why they were brought to the Island, and Jacob says it was because he made a mistake long ago. Jacob notes that none of them had had happy lives prior to coming to the Island; he said he chose them because they were alone like him and needed something else in life. He says he crossed Kate's name off the wall because she became a mother, but tells her that she can have the job if she wants it. He tells them that their job is to protect the light from the monster. Jacob says he hopes it's possible to kill him, but he doesn't know. Jacob says he's not going to choose one of them because he wants them to be able to choose; if none decide to do it, "this ends very badly". Jack stands up and volunteers to be the one. He seems certain that he's the one. Jacob confirms his decision, and tells him it's time.
Hurley, Kate and Sawyer watch as Jack and Jacob walk through the jungle. Jacob tells Jack where he can find the light of the Island. Jacob asks Jack for a cup, and chants as he dips his hands into the water, and then fills the cup. He tells Jack to drink from the cup; Jack pauses to ask how long he'll have the job, and Jacob tells him as long as he can. Jack drinks, and Jacob tells him that now the two are alike.
In the alternate reality, Sawyer retrieves Desmond, Kate and Sayid from their cells. Kate tries to get him to let her go, but he refuses. Minutes later, Des, Sayid and Kate sit in a police transport van. Des tells them that it's time to leave, and Sayid calls him a crazy man. Desmond asks for their trust, and tells them that he's going to ask them both to do something for him after they're free. They promise to comply. Ana Lucia opens the back of the van and releases them. Hugo arrives in a Hummer with money, and the group splinters into two factions. Desmond tells Kate that the two of them are going to a concert.
On the Island, Locke and Ben walk in the darkness. They arrive at the well, and Locke is annoyed to see that Desmond isn't inside. Locke vows to find Des and says that Des will help him destroy the Island.
