Lost, Season 6 Episode 3 "What Kate Does" Review

What Kate Does: Some Boring Stuff

Ryan Baggett
Over 15 million people watched the premiere of episodes 1 and 2. This great intro into the final season was destined create a little disappointment in Lost, Season 6 Episode 3.

Reality: On the Island
Episode 3 begins with Sayid waking up from death with his gunshot wound mysteriously healed from the magic temple spring. Armed men are holding our heroes hostage and refuse to explain why. These mysterious temple-dwellers send Kate to track down the sulking lone-wolf, James who runs off into the jungle.

I'm actually tired of James and his woman problems. He has supposedly been growing up for a few years now, but he still acts like a 40 year old teenager. Maybe it's just that his acting feels too forced, but that could be a problem with the script writing itself.

Dogan, the leader of the temple-dwelling others, finally introduces himself to Jack where they argue over giving Sayid a pill. Now Dogan speaks of some dark force creeping over Sayid's heart-just like Jack's sister? So what is wrong with Claire?

Alternate Reality: Off the Island
In the other world, the heroes are playing out their lives as they would if there had never been any plane crash on the island-because they had already traveled back through time and destroyed the ship-wrecking/airplane-crashing island back in 1978. Kate is the focus of this scenario where she has escaped from the police and made nice with Claire, helping her through some false labor.

Conclusions:
Over all, Episode 3 was a bit weak. Lost is best when it's filled with intrigue and mystery, but trying to figure out who is who (such as the temple-dwellers) is not intrigue. It's frustration. And the super-emotional turmoil in Sawyer didn't quite get pulled off without clichés and overacting. The false-labor scene with Claire and Kate was about the most excitement in Episode 3, and that felt like a side story. The only real intrigue from this episode is what Claire of the Jungle has been doing for the last three years. Despite my complaining, I'm sure all of this was necessary for the buildup of later episodes, and those will surely knock another 30 million socks off.
