Lost Season 6 Episode 6 (my Review of Sundown)

Did We Get the Answers ABC Promised?

Andrea Rowe
It has been my intention to write about Lost at least one time since the season began. I am an avid follower of the series. Until a few episodes ago, I went to the website ran by DarkUFO to look for spoilers to upcoming episodes. Even several weeks ago, more spoilers were out for episodes past the sixth than for the sixth episode. When ABC promised there would be answers to our questions in the pathetic promo for this week, I assumed there would be answers.

I am uncertain if I remember correctly but this may be the episode where people were chased away from the filming because of so many new things being revealed. I remembered it this way before last night's episode and that is an influence on why I thought there would be answers to some big questions. I did not feel we found answers last night but watched the episode again this morning with lesser expectations. Now I believe there were some questions answered.

After Sayid was drowned by Dogen's team and came back to life, there was some question about who claimed him. As I lurked on ABC's message boards, I saw many people believing Jacob raised Sayid so he was actually a good guy. Judging from the latter part of Lost Season 6 episode 6, it is safe to say Sayid is not a good guy. Following this same train of thought, the reason the water was muddied was conclusively answered. Fake John Locke (smoke monster or whatever you want to call him) was revealed as evil incarnate by Dogen. The water was previously clear because good, or Jacob, was in charge. It muddied when fake John Locke became in charge. This was something fairly obvious to most people prior to last night but it was answered firmly that we were on the right track.

Most of our Losties are now on a side-fake Locke or Jacob. It appears Kate may be the only one in question as she was noticeably dazed when she walked out with the rest of the evil side. She grabbed a gun as well and appeared to be the only one so my assumption is she is not evil like the rest. She apparently believes a gun will keep her safe now and it would not-as the smoke monster or fake Locke showed he could survive a stab wound to the chest. Fake Locke looked at her in a confused manner so it makes me wonder if he will use her as a bargaining chip with someone on Jacob's side such as Jack. He let her live for a reason. Then again, none of the candidates appear to be able to be killed with the exception of the original Locke.

Dogen's attachment to the baseball was revealed in Lost Season 6 episode 6 as he told the story of his son almost being killed because of an intoxicated drive to a baseball game. The baseball question only came into my mind when Dogen would not kill Sayid as the baseball dropped to the floor. Interestingly Dogen feels guilt for being the cause of his son's demise (had Jacob not stepped in) and Sayid once felt the same guilt for killing others. The grey areas in this show are incredible.

Dogen and Sayid were contrasted when their motivations for being in the island temple were revealed. Dogen's reasoning was to allow his son to live even though he would never see him again. Sayid's reasoning was to see Nadia again. Sayid's request was more selfish as he wanted to see Nadia again for his own benefit while Dogen went without seeing his son in self-sacrifice. Maybe this explains why Dogen was the key to the smoke monster being unable to enter the temple? This article is supposed to be about answers, however, not questions. Answers were so few last night so forget the answers.

What stood out the most for me in Lost Season 6 episode 6 was Sayid's storyline being so confusing. Until close to the end, I was uncertain if he was good on the island or good in the flash-sideways. The grey area theme certainly came into play with his storyline. Sayid's storyline was a throwback to the white and black stones found on "Adam and Eve"-the two skeletons Hurley and Jack spoke about in the episode The Lighthouse and other black/white references. Speaking of Hurley and Jack with the skeletons and Hurley's response that they could be them after time traveling to dinosaur times, I wonder if this was not an intention on the part of the writers to open the idea that the skeletons are not male/female?

In the initial episode, the skeletons were not found side-by-side as they were in Lost Season 6 episode 5. Perhaps the skeletons are actually Jacob and the smoke monster in their human form? Maybe the skeletons are Jack and his dad since Jack said his dad's ghost led him to that area? The clothing supposedly deteriorated to a point of it being 50-60 years ago but with the time discrepancies on this show, who knows? Perhaps after the show is over it will be revealed Jack and his father had a closer relationship after all and everything that happened changed it?

The constant dissonance of not understanding what the writers are trying to reveal is giving me a headache. My husband said it best when he said, "I'll root for Locke if we can get the dang show over with." Lost Season 6 episode 6 was a good one-if not one of the best but the promise of answers and being let down was especially harsh. There were some very small answers but not enough to justify that promo. This is the first time in six years I can say that I am happy to know Lost will be coming to an end.
