This article is for those of you who have never seen Lost and are wondering what it is all about. In this 'absolute beginners guide' I will try to explain what Lost is about and what makes it so exiting to watch. Read the full article: Lost season one review. I've written it so that there are no spoilers in the article. I strongly recommend you don't read any spoilers if you haven't seen the series yet. Not knowing what will happen is part of the excitement.

A plane crashes on a seemingly deserted island. Most passengers are in shock as they try to find their friends or family. After everyone is calmed down, they need to come up with a plan. What should they do? Try to survive for as long as possible? Do everything to get rescued? It soon turns out that there is a lot going on besides their plane crash.

Lost doesn't just follow one single storyline. The people that survived the crash all have 'baggage' and the series rotates between island storylines and those of individuals, which are mostly flashbacks. The first flashbacks take place right before the crash, on the plane. As the series advances, the flashbacks go back further. This learns us more about the characters and their life stories. And by learning more about the characters, we learn more about the current situation. It is like a puzzle that slowly but surely gets all the pieces right.

Probably the most notable thing about the series is the build up. The build up is what makes Lost the award winning drama series that it is. The island and the storylines can be very mysterious and raise many questions. Some of these questions will be answered in the very same episode, other answers will unravel over a longer course of time. Most episodes end with a cliff hanger, making it almost impossible not to continue watching. Because the situations are so tense and the cliff hangers make you hungry for more, the show never gets boring. Even when you're in the middle of a long flashback storyline.

The camera work is something special, too. Unlike most TV series, Lost tends to use many different filming styles and camera shots, making the pictures more dynamic. You can compare it to major movie productions. These camera shots make the images look very 'natural' and it will probably go unnoticed because of that.

Another great thing is the lines. The show combines pure drama with humour and awesome quotes. Even though the series is all about the drama, the mystery and emotions, these moments can really crack you up. The humour isn't bad taste (combining drama with comedy might very well fail), but rather just another part of the series that makes Lost what it is.

In my opinion, Lost is one of the greatest drama series ever created. The storylines are interesting and tense. Every episode answers questions and raises new ones. Being moved by the events, the characters and the storylines is inevitable. Whether you're a fan of plot twists, mysteries, good build ups or just great drama; you will love Lost. It has everything you need in a drama television show and that's why tens of millions of people have enjoyed this show for over 5 years.
