Lost Stars Before the Plane Crash

Why so Many of the Faces on the Hit ABC TV Show Look Familiar

Wanda Leibowitz
Lost stars a strong ensemble cast that is one of the most diverse groups of actors on mainstream network television today. One thing that sets "Lost" stars apart from the famous names who drive the ratings of many other popular TV shows through the roof is that few of the actors on this suspenseful, gripping drama series are household names.

However, many Lost stars look very familiar to many viewers. Some "Lost" stars are easily recognizable, and many fans of the show know that Charlie was in Lord of the Rings, or that Claire spent a season on Roswell.

However, more than one person has stayed awake at night trying to remember where they've seen Jack before, or what movie they remember Ana-Lucia from, and there are few things more frustrating than not being able to place an actor or actress. Luckily, you can look forward to a good night's sleep in the future thanks to this handy guide to a few familiar faces in the array of "Lost" stars.

The youngest of the Lost stars is also one of the most experienced actors in the crew. Young Malcolm David Kelley, who plays Michael's son Walt, has been getting steady work since the tender age of five years old. He has done guest spots on a number of well known television shows including "Judging Amy," "Malcolm In The Middle," and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." His film work has ranged from comedies like "You Got Served" to the heavy-hitting drama "Antwone Fisher."

Add to this impressive list of credits a large number of national commercials and you have a resume that will rival that of any one of the "Lost" stars who are three or four times Kelley's age.

Many people know about the famous television work of "Lost" stars like Matthew Fox, the actor who plays Dr. Jack Shepard. Fox's career as a small-screen heartthrob took off when he was cast as Charlie Salinger on "Party of Five," the 1990s hit drama about a family of orphans living together. However, fewer viewers remember Fox's brief turn in the teen horror comedy "My Boyfriend's Back," a 1993 romp about a popular girl who falls for a zombie suitor.

The movie was far from a hit, but if you do rent this dud keep an eye out for blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo by a young Renee Zellweger. This embarrassing flop shows that even the most recognizable "Lost" stars spent their share of days in obscurity.

Michelle Rodriguez who plays the cop Ana-Lucia is one of the more familiar"Lost" stars, as she has appeared in such mainstream hit flicks as "The Fast and the Furious" and "Resident Evil." However, arguably her best work to date was in the independent film "Girlfight," where she gave a nuanced, engaging, and incredibly charismatic performance as a teenager boxer struggling to balance traditional gender expectations with the demands of her sport.

Rodriguez landed this leading role at her very first audition, which certainly supports the view of the many fans and critics who feel that she is the most outstanding performer of all of the "Lost" stars.

Whichever one of the "Lost" stars is your favorite, with a little bit of digging you are sure to find at least a few gems in his or her past.

My writing has been published in print, recorded on audio CD, and performed onstage, but there's nothing quite like working for the web. I love the freedom, flexibility, and fast pace of writing for AC.  View profile

  • The young actor who plays Walt has already done a wide range of parts ranging from comedy to drama.
  • Before "Lost," and before "Party of Five," Matthew Fox appeared in a teen zombie flick.
  • Michelle Rodriguez (Ana-Lucia)'s first film "Girlfight" is considered some of her strongest work.
Unlike actors on most hit shows, no actor on "Lost" is guaranteed a set number of episodes, because the writers reserve the right to kill off any character at any time!
