Lost: "A Tale of Two Cities"

My Theories

Heidi Adams
Season three of Lost premiered on October 4th, 2006. The episode, "A Tale of Two Cities", proved to be even more confusing as the three main characters of the show have been kidnapped by the Others. Jack, Kate, and Sawyer have been taken by the Others and were detained in seperate areas of what appeared to be a former zoo compound. Each characted was treated differently by the Others. Kate was able to shower and even was offered breakfast with an ocean view as she sat with the protaganist of this season. Later, however, she was caged near Sawyer. Sawyer was caged outside in what used to be a cage for bears and was treated like an animal. He had to figure out a way to get food and water through what appeared to be game of skill and mental challenges using levers and weighted objects. Jack, was locked in a guarded room of what appeared to be the sublevel of an aquarium. The show focused on his flashbacks, mentally torturing him and he was soon confronted by one of his captors with what appeared to be an entire binder full of pages of his life. The entire hour premier led to no conclusions and left the viewing audience even more confused about the purpose of the main characters being in captivity.

However, I have a theory of my own. My theory on the show is that all of the members on the plane are already dead. They just don't know it yet. My first point to support this theory is that in this season's premier Jack's captor had an entire log book about his entire life. Not only did the book contain everything about him, but it contained information about all of his friends and family. Was his captor reading from the book of life? Is this island a judgement place to decide where each lost soul is to go? Could the Others be God's handymen or the Devil's? Are the characters receiving judgement based on their lives?

My second point is that one character, Locke, was mysteriously healed and able to walk after the plane crashed. This would make perfect sense. If he is dead, surely his limbs will be in working order. Doesn't the soul choose what body it wants to have? Locke would have chosen to have his legs working again.

My third point is that Jack is able to see his dad on the island also. I think this is a ghostly apparition that appears to him becuase he is already dead.

Whatever the outcome of the show we are sure to keep guessing. I think my best theory is that the writers are making it up as they go. I don't think they intend to give away too much information. If they want the show to continue for several more seasons, there will definitely not be too many questions answered this season.
