LOST's Oceanic Flight 815 Halloween Costume

Create a Replica of the TV Show's Doomed Plane for Halloween

Victor Medina
There are a number of LOST fans out there, and many of them have struggled to find an effective Halloween costume of their favorite character from the series. While it is difficult to find an effective costume, you can make your own LOST Halloween costume that will be instantly recognizable: Oceanic Flight 815! That's right: making the ultimate LOST costume involves no human character, but the doomed plane that crashed on the island.

Going to a Halloween party as Oceanic Flight 815 will not only turn heads, it will win you a number of compliments for originality. Making the costume will take time, but is easier than it sounds.

SUPPLIES NEEDED
A large appliance box
A large sheet of foam board
Craft clue or spray adhesive
Duct tape
Suspenders
Markers
Paint, white and silver (your choice of spray cans or craft paint)
Pictures of Lost actors

MAKING THE PLANE
Making the body of the plane will be easy, so long as you have a large cardboard box used to hold an appliance like a small refrigerator. You will want a box with a rectangular shape: the size you use is up to you. You will be "wearing" this box around you, so you will appear to be coming out of the top of the plane. Remember, you want something that you can maneuver in without knocking over furniture or people at whatever party you attend. Of course, the box won't look or be shaped like a real plane; it will look ridiculous, which is exactly the point.

You will want to cut out two holes in the box, so you can wear it around your waist. The holes should be on the long sides of box, so the box can be worn perpendicular to your body. To hold it to your body, consider attaching suspenders around the top hole so it rests on your shoulders. Of course, the box won't actually be shaped like the body of the plane, so it's important to give it a great paint job and add the little details that will "sell" it. More on that in a moment.

For the wings and tail, you can cut those out using a piece of foam board. Foam board is much lighter and will keep the wings and tail straight. Cut slots in the sides and the back of the box to insert the wings and tail, which can be held in place by craft clue, duct tape, or even "pins" that go through the wings inside the box.

DECORATING THE PLANE
Giving the box a nice paint job and adding a few little "extras" will make all the difference in how your costume looks. The body of the plane should be painted white along the top half and grey or silver along the bottom. Craft paint can be used but a can of spray paint will be more effective, cheaper, and will give a better look. Once you have the base colors down, you can add details like a blue pinstripe along the side, wings, and tail. You can use a marker to add these pinstripes.

You will also want to add the Oceanic Airline logo along the front sides of the box. You can either do this yourself with a dark blue marker by just writing out the name, or if you have a color printer and access to the internet, you can find the Oceanic logo from various "Lost" fan websites and print it out. If you print it on heavy stock paper, you can glue it easily to the box. You can also add the logo to the wings and the tail.

For an added touch, print out the "Dharma" logo (it is widely available online) and paste it to the box somewhere. You can also add the "unlucky numbers" of 4, 8, 15, 23, and 42 to different parts of the plane and see if fans catch it.

ADDING THE "PASSENGERS"
What will really distinguish the box plane will be the addition of the passenger windows. Instead of drawing in windows, cut out pictures of the "Lost" actors from the plane and attach them to the sides of the box so it appears they are looking out of the windows of the plane!

To get pictures, you can either buy a copy of Lost Magazine, which is available in most bookstores, and find pictures of most of the actors there. You can also find a number of pictures online at ABC.com or other fansites and print them out. If you need to find out the names of some actors you can't find pictures of, look up "Lost" at IMDB.com and get a full cast list. Make sure you cut the pictures out in the same square size, so they will look like windows when you paste them to the side of the box.

For the cockpit windows, trace them out on the front of the box, and find a picture of actor Greg Grunberg (who played the pilot in the first episode) and glue it to the cockpit window. If you can't find a picture of him in his pilot's outfit, remember that he also stars in the TV show "Heroes," so finding a picture should not be hard to find.

YOUR OUTFIT
What you wear is entirely up to you. If you can find a pilot's outfit, wear that, or you can wear a "castaway" outfit, modeled after a passenger like Jack (a business suit) or Charlie (a hoodie with tape around your knuckles). You can even carry around a polar bear stuffed animal. You can even wear regular clothes and a Lost t-shirt or cap. It's up to you!
