Louis Freeman, African-American Pilot

Flying High

Lee Hansen
Louis Freeman is used to breaking barriers. He and his brother were the first two African-American students to integrate Woodrow Wilson High School in Austin, Texas. He was the first ROTC Cadet Corps Commander. And when he attended college at East Texas State University, he was, again the first black to hold that same position.
In 1974 he graduated with a B.S. in Sociology and Psychology.

OTHER NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

► First Black to attend Air Force Pilot Training

► Flew T 43s while assigned to Matthew AFB in California

► He became the first second lieutenant to become a squadron scheduler

► One of the first lieutenants to become an instructor pilot and supervisor of flying

► Left Air Force in August 1980 and was hired by Southwest Airlines three months later. At that time he was their first Black pilot and captain.

► First Chief Pilot for Southwest. In this position he hires, fires, is the immediate supervisor to all pilots at Midway Airport. He also interfaces with the City of Chicago and the FAA. Helps determine company policy.

I would say his resume is quite impressive. Louis Freeman has definitely led by example. He broke racial barriers, while paving the way for others.
