Louisiana Ends Free Business Promotion for Prostitutes

Kathy Foust

The state of Louisiana has some good legal news for prostitutes but some bad news for their current marketing model. Currently, solicitation of the acts of sodomy and oral sex are felonies in Louisiana, but they will soon carry misdemeanor charges instead. While prostitutes will no longer be listed as sex offenders when the law goes into effect, they will also lose free promotion by way of their driver's license.

Louisiana has always had some interesting ways of using a resident's driver's license. Their system currently does random checks to see if licensed drivers carry insurance, something I found out when I lived there. If they don't have insurance, the license is suspended without the driver knowing it until they receive a notification via the postal system.

They also list sex offender statuses on driver's licenses, which may be a way for the state to discourage sex offenders from living in Louisiana, but probably isn't very helpful from a job seeking perspective unless you're a prostitute looking to work for an escort service.

Most professionals have to special order business cards. Those who have their photos put on the cards can expect to pay a bit extra for that service. Until recently, Louisiana has unwittingly provided this service for free to resident prostitutes. That's because until recent changes in Louisiana laws, solicitations for sodomy and oral sex were both crimes that resulted in felony sex offender charges. Since the crime is exclusive to solicitations of these services, any prostitute who wanted to advertise these services for free only needed to be convicted of these crimes to have them listed on their license.

While the fact that Louisiana is joining the current century as far as their views on sexual activities go, prostitutes who want to list these services as part of their business promotions will now need to do so using the same format as every other marketer and invest in promotional business cards. They also need to keep in mind that while solicitations of oral sex and sodomy are no longer felonies, they will still be charged with a misdemeanor.

Prostitutes who have been convicted of felony charges for solicitation of oral sex and sodomy may do well to have their current driver's license renewed immediately if they wish to continue the use of current free business promotion by using their driver's license. After all, there probably isn't a better method of advertising your services than to have the state do it for you!
