Love in the Deepest of Pits

Wisdom from Corrie Ten Boom

April Lorier, Author and Encourager
One of my favorite movies came from the 1971 best-selling book The Hiding place by Corrie ten Boom. It is the story of her family's involvement in the Dutch Underground and subsequent imprisonment during Word War II.

Her dying sister, Betsie's. words inspired the book: "...[We] must tell them what we have learned here. We must tell them that there is no pit so deep that He is no deeper still. They will listen to us, Corrie, because we have been there."

After months of suffering and imprisonment in Nazi concentration camps, Betsie and Corrie had seen God's love thrive in the most oppressive environment. In the dark, hate-filled German prison camps, they experienced God's love and shared the gospel with women whose hearts and bodies were wounded and dying.

God's unfailing love isn't just what He does; it is who He is! First John 4:7 tells us, "God is Love." That means every mention of love in the Bible describes God. Love is patient, kind, not self-seeking, not proud... God is all of those things and much more! This is only a glimmer of the depth of His love. God offers us this deep, abiding life each and every day, no matter where we are.

Psalm 48 is a song about God's glory. His people were meditating on His love because they saw it all around them. They remembered the great things God did for them because He loved them.

Today I must remember God's love for me. Though I may be walking through the darkest time of my life, "there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still."

  • Betsy ten Boom taught her sister that there is no pit so deep that God's love can't reach you.
  • Both sisters went through unspeakable horrors at the hands of the Nazis in Word War II
  • It Makes Us Realize Our Pits are not Too Deep for God's love to still reach us.
