Love Your Job in 2011

Top Five Ways to Love Your Job

M
It's a new year and it's time for a new outlook on your life, particularly your job. Since you spend most of your life working, it's a shame to dread it so much.

Work should be a place where you grow by learning from others as well as yourself. It should be a place of triumph and friendships. While you may chuckle at this and think, "Not where I work!", it's not impossible for you to improve your work experience, no matter where you work.

#1 Change Your Perspective

You can't change your work situation and if you can, then do it. If you can find another job, go out and find another one. If you can't, start making changes in your current work environment and job duties so you will take more pride in your work. An easy way to do this is to speak to your boss about ways you can excel in your job and start thinking of new ways of doing things. Your boss will be impressed by your initiative and you will soon feel a better sense of accomplishment at work. Your job will soon be your special project that you dedicate time to each day.

#2 Stop Stressing Out

Some work environments are stressful enough without having to deal with additional stressors such as disorganized offices, cubicles, etc. Tidy up your work area and file your paperwork accordingly. Look at your schedule and start planning tasks better. The more you plan, the less overwhelmed you will feel.

#3 You're Not Superhuman

Everyone makes mistakes and everyone needs a break. Mistakes are OKAY. You learn from them so instead of beating yourself up over messing up on something, take it as a lesson and know that you have just improved yourself. People who don't take breaks or vacations are also more likely to make mistakes. So don't think you can work every day for a year and be fine. Take a vacation and as many breaks as you can. You're mental health as well as job performance will thank you.

#4 Have Fun at Work

Yes, that's right, work can be fun. You may not like the people you work with but there's little you can do about that so just accept it so you can make the best of it. That means, start being friendly and taking part in office functions. It will give you that break you need and provide you with much needed social interaction. You may even end up finding out that you actually do like a person you thought you despised.

#5 Make Goals and Reach Them

Don't just wallow in your job. Make goals and plans to reach them. That way, you are always working towards something and won't feel like you are in a monotonous situation. Once you reach a goal, congratulate yourself and take pride in it. Then establish another goal and work towards that one. The idea is always set your eyes on what comes next. If you have absolutely no goal where you currently work, that may be your cue that your motivations should be spent somewhere else. Speak your boss about it and then determine if your current workplace is right for you.
