Love Poem for Valentine's Day

Same Time Next Year

Patricia Sicilia
That summer I was still a child, and like a firefly
You lured me to a secret place meant just for you and I.
And in your arms through golden days and nights of gentle breeze
I learned to love.

We laughed and talked and loved until the leaves began to drift
And then you went away from me but left a special gift --
You called me friend.

One golden, gentle summer day, you came to me again
We laughed and talked as shadows waned
And loved when evening came.

But when, at dawn, the air grew chill
And blew the changing leaves
You took my hand
And called me friend
And drifted with the breeze.

And every year for many years, just before the leaves
Drifted down on summer's farewell breeze
You came to me.
We laughed and talked and loved,
And called each other friend
'Till dawn.

One autumn day I found someone who stayed past the sunrise
I took his name, and bore his child
And cut bittersweet ties.

But that next gentle breezy day before the leaves would fall
I turned to find you waiting there --
You'd come, friend, after all.

(That's it, folks, last poem from me, E-VER!)

That was beautiful. Forever is a long time. You might want to change your mind when inspiration tugs at you to write poetry again.

A little too much brain strain, huh. I think it's a lovely tribute. I'm kind of with you on that poetry. I give it a shot sometimes but it pretty much confounds me as a rule.

Thanks so much Pat - If you're only going to post one poem on this site that's the right one . . . in my life it speaks to many levels, all of which I enjoy revisiting, even the "painful" ones.
