Love Poems

An Akathist for Wendy My Wife

Andrew Lohr
Engaged in May

*25 June A.D. 2008

The image of Christ's love I see in you
For He in grace accepts me, as you do--
Accepts my very self. What joy! I see
Not just the image, but an aspect too.

*26 June

At best I want to always talk with God
And thinking oft' of you, to talk with you
"I want"--I long, I wince, I yearn, I cry
And may I not just yearn, but also do.

Some years ago young Philip said to me
"My duty's not so much to tell Jeannette
About her duty to submit to me,
As, be to her well worth submitting to
And easy to submit to." We agree
That Phil is right, for Jesus says to all,
"My yoke is easy and My burden light."

*Unmarried; unfinished (a prayer to triune Jehovah)

I thank You for her soft and supple back
And for the splendid promise of her front
And other wonders of the wedding night
Worth waiting for (as You and she deserve)
And for how well our heads lean each on each
And for her skin: how smooth below her sleeves
And on her sockless feet; so much for now.
I praise You for her body soft and strong
And for her caution: "Don't yet touch me there."

I praise You for her company in prayer
As tears and laughter come before Your throne
And You who know us in our inward parts
Make openness before You intimate
Beyond undressing--seeing only skin--
as some have said.

I praise You for the wonders of her face
A real face, and turned, of all, to me!

*Undated

Pecks and pecs are nice
But oh how wonderful
to share soft lips!

*Undated

Jesus impresses me;
I do not.

Wendy to love God with
Wendy so I praise Him
Maker, Savior, Lord!

Of all I've seen in 47 years
--People and things save body blood and word--
You Wendy are my choice and my delight
Especially smiling naked in our bed
Not even glasses hiding bits of curve
The rings we wed with riding love's delights.
I love to be with you, to see your face,
To feel your warm and soft and close embrace
To touch and hold you part by part; to stir
And make love with you, cool down, relax,
And sleep with you, skin cuddling darling skin;
To talk and pray with you, a nakedness
That reaches through our skins to see our souls
And touches Jesus Christ's all-seeing love.

*Undated

Wendy's very near
God brought us together
How gracious triune Yah!

*6 Aug: Going to work

Of course I love your greeting-hugs, and oh!
The hugs we share excel all hugs I've had!
Of course I love to see your surface charms
To see, and touch with love, your darling skin;
Of course I love when we make love, and love
Your pleasure warming, cooling, and at heat;
I love your praise; love when we serve in love
With diapers, dishes, odds and ends of life;
And not all newlyweds, nor old, can say
"Of course," so I praise God for these delights.
Yet rarer still, and wonderful to me
This morning on four hours' sleep you rose
And opening up my Bible, read aloud
And o'er my coffee we of Jesus spoke.

*8 Aug: From hospital

3:30, you will come
6:10 a.m., where are you, dear?
You come; praise God!

18 Aug

"I love you," you say.
"I happily reciprocate,"
I answer truly.

O God, whose blessing we do not deserve
Triune Jehovah, self-complete in love
Son Father Holy Ghost--what need Ye more?
Yet Wendy You created (thank You Lord!)
And after five and twenty years of prayer
(And lonely clonely days of heresy
As if You Lord were not diverse yet one)
We covenanted, she and I, to love
Each other, and in holy bread and cup
The death-and-coming table of our Lord
We partied at with holy family
Renewing covenant with Christ our joy
For fellowship-in-love You spread beyond
Yourself, triune Jehovah, clear to us.
