Love Without Abandon

April Higney
The ship was tossed through the seas,

coming to rest upon the white sands,

turquoise blue waters,

near the rocky edge of shoreline.

He emerged in exhaustion,

but not of all abandon,

as he called to her in the howling winds,

which sounded as though a mere whisper,

in tears streaming, unseen, awash in torrents of rain.

The fragile vessel torn, cracking against nearby rocks, in lightning strikes.

A torn fabric floating upon the wind,

as though nothing would ever stop it.

Drifting into the thick depths of a lost paradise.

He could not find her.

Love lost forever within lands unknown.

His head in his hands,

then calling out to the raging sky.

Many moons, many starlit nights, many suns, and storms passed over.

Many months, many years,

he held on to the thought of how he held her.

How he had somehow survived and made it back to the world he had known.

His heart still yearned for that precious one,

the truest of life's loves that had never faded into the sad placement of time.

He traveled over the seas, this time in calm oceans,

beneath soft purple haze,

without abandon,

coming to rest upon the rocky edge of shoreline.

He remembered the sounds, the howling winds,

yet a luminous ray of sunlight cast its way through the lush paradise.

Fragile, his heart, still felt torn,

as though nothing would ever stop, this longing,

for her.

He entered the quiet,

a sunlit cave, where the rocks had broken loose,

to pour in the softest of shadows,

as he trampled upon the crispness of paper,

he kneeled to dust off the contents of years rest.

In his hands he held the soft fabric of a linen,

in quill inked script, her words, her desires, her love for him,

never ending,

a tear fell,

as he smiled in memory,

of her soft kisses,

that her love for him was never lost,

and he held the words,

through all eternity.
