Love's Vision

Chapter 1

The sound of thunder rumbling in the distance woke Leeann from her slumber. She glanced around her room laughing softly to herself. Everything was as it should be.

Leeann frowned as she started to get up, she'd had the dream again. Her dream guy calling out to her searching for her as if lost. And from what it seemed also a little afraid.

Leeann grimaced at her reflection in the mirror as she was brushing her shoulder length brownish-black hair. The bruises along her face and body were starting to fade, Leeann realized sighing with relief. Kayla wouldn't be too upset upon her arrival.

Satisfied with her appearance Leeann took one last look around her apartment. It would be the only time she would ever look back at this place; and it only held sad memories for her. She did not regret having to give it up.

Tears welled up in her eyes at the thought of all the hell she'd been through the past six months. Good riddance to this life and her ex-boyfriend Jason; the only thing sustaining her was her friendship with Kayla and the thought of her dream guy out there somewhere.

Onward to a new life and possibly a new love, Leeann thought as she tossed her belongings into the backseat then driving off, leaving the city of New Orleans soon behind.

Hopefully the foreboding sound of the impending weather wasn't a sign of things to come.

It was a slow day for Kane and Tristan. Slow was good in Kane's profession; he was an EMT. Still he was apprehensive; visions from the past few months plaguing his dreams and his awakened moments.

"What's wrong with you Kane? You seem distracted lately. I'd think you would be happy that we're having such a slow week."

"It's not that. I'd rather not talk about it, you'll think I'm crazy." Kane kept his eyes focused on the road.

"I'll be there in a hour or less." Leeann promised. "We can grab something to eat then. Oh shit." She cursed mostly to herself as she tried to ease off the gas pedal.

"Is something wrong?" Kayla heard Leeann softly swearing to herself on the other end of the phone. "This is not good. . . fuck!" Kayla blinked frightened as the phone went dead.

Finally, a real vacation. Kris was relieved to finally have some time off. Time that was long overdue. He thought wearily.

His family would be surprised but pleased to see him. Kris smiled at the thought then grinned as he thought of one person in particular.

Kayla.

He wondered how she would react if he just suddenly appeared on her doorstep, if her face would light up at the mere sight of him as it always did. On many a night during a case the thought of her is what kept him going. She was probably what kept him alive or the illusion of it; Kris thought with a grimace.

"Oh my God!" Tristan looked on wide eyed with horror as the car in the other lane flipped a third time landing top down in a deep yet water filled ditch; the road slippery from pouring rain only moments before.

"If whoever was in that car makes it out alive it'll be a miracle." he commented. Kane closed his eyes sickened by the thought.

"She better be." Kane in a flash was out of the ambulance and attempting to help the driver out of the mangled car. The sick feeling in the pit of his stomach continued; it was as if he was connected to this person. Silently he prayed it wasn't anyone he knew.

Kane blinked as he looked down at the small female bewildered. She seemed so familiar to him. Thank the spirits she was still breathing as he checked her pulse!

"Miss, you're going to be ok. I don't know if you can hear me but. . ." At that moment Leeann opened her eyes. "Grizzly Bear." she mumbled before lapsing into unconsciousness.

Kane blinked at this. The wail of sirens could be heard in the distance. Both the police and fire department would soon arrive. Tristan was steadying the gurney ready for transport.

What to do? What to do?! Kayla was pacing back and forth, she was an emotional wreck. All day she was consumed with a feeling of foreboding.

Robyn looked to her cell phone as if it held the answer. Maybe she should call Kris, he was always good with these sort of situations. Especially since he was an FBI agent. Kayla couldn't shake the feeling that Leeann's car had been tampered with.

Before she could place the call her doorbell rang. Frantic as to who it could be, Kayla went to answer it. She opened the door and hurled herself right into Kris's arms!

"Baby, what's wrong?" Kris hugged Kayla tighter, his stomach turning into knots at the feeling of Kayla's distress. "Please stop or I might become ill as well." Kayla had always been one to feel her emotions so intensely; Kris for some unknown reason always shared her feelings.

"I cant! It's Leeann. I don't know what but something has happened! We were talking. She was on her way and. . ." Kayla was sobbing even harder as she told Kris about the phone going dead.

Kris nodded. "I'll call around and see if there have been any accident reports. Maybe Kane has heard something. Baby, please don't worry so much and make yourself sick. It would break my heart if you did."

"How about I make you some tea and you relax?" Kris suggested. "I'll make the necessary calls. . . An hour or less you said?" That would've put Leeann in either New Roads through Simmesport. Kris surmised.

Kayla nodded slowly. She loved how compassionate and understanding Kris was; he always called her 'baby'.

"Alright." she finally agreed. "I'll try. But make enough tea for you as well." she says frowning. How she hated to cause Kris any pain!

"Ok. Thanks." Kris had just hung up the phone as Robyn hugged him. "What was that for?" he asked although he wasn't complaining. He'd do anything just to have Kayla touch him!

"I'm sorry that you're feeling what I'm feeling and worrying you as well. I don't mean to." Kayla tried to wipe her tears away.

Kris stopped her, kissing each of her palms. "I know you don't sweetheart and I'm glad to share what you're going through. I only wish this wasn't happening. I happen to care very much for you." Kris went to start the tea then tried Kane's cell phone. Kane's shift would be over soon.

Kane's shift was now over as he and Tristan brought the young woman into the ER. Something compelled him to stay. Somehow he persuaded Tristan to take the ambulance back without him, Kane would have someone pick him up.

But why did he want to stay?! Sure the female seemed to know his given Indian name. . . And that alone intrigued him. He didn't even know her name!

At that moment Kane's cell phone rang. He didn't remember even having it on.
"Hey bro, what's up?" he said upon answering.

"A lot." Kris answered watching as Kayla sipped her lavender and chamomile tea. It would soothe her nerves. "I'm here at Kayla's and her friend who was on her way here never made it. Kayla has a feeling something might have went wrong with the vehicle."

Kane silently cursed to himself. So that was why the woman seemed so familiar! He must've seen a picture of her at Kayla's and that was how she knew Kane's Indian name as well. Kane breathed a sigh of relief. So he wasn't slowly descending into lunacy.

"Kane?" Kris frowned as the phone had went silent wondering if his brother were still there!

"I'm here bro. I'm at New Roads Memorial Hospital, there was a accident on Highway 1 and it could possibly be Kayla's friend. She was unconscious when we brought her in." Kane prayed that it wasn't but in his heart knew that it was.

"We'll be there shortly." Kris frowned as he noticed Kayla watching him. Normally he wouldn't mind her looking at him but he hated to be the bearer of bad news.

"Kane is in New Roads. There was an accident along the highway and the young woman was sent the hospital there." Kris frowned awaiting Kayla's reaction.

"Oh Goddess, is she going to be alright?!" Kayla stood up abruptly, tea sloshing in her mug as she started shaking.

"Hey, it's ok." Kris went over to Kayla wrapping her in a hug. We don't even know if it is her. We're to meet Kane there. Everything will be ok. I promise." Kris brushed a quick kiss to the top of Kayla's head.

"I cant shake the feeling that it is Leeann, Kris." Kayla frowned as they drove down the highway. She got the feeling her appearance was about as bad as she felt. "I only pray that her car wasn't tampered with!"

"We'll know once the police report is released." Kris replied taking Kayla's hand. He smiled when she didn't object.

"So what are you doing down here Kris? I know you didn't quit the bureau, did you?" Kayla shook her head. Of course he hadn't! Kris wouldn't be able to get any information from Leeann's accident if he had!

"I could always call in a few favors but no I haven't." Kris chuckled as he read Kayla's thoughts. He had always been good at that. "I'm taking four weeks of vacation." he replied.

"Oh." It was all Kayla could say. She smiled somewhat. "Cool. Then you won't be leaving as fast as you came." Kayla was happy about that.

"Aw, you miss me baby? I'm sorry I live so far away." Kris commented. Too bad he couldn't persuade Kayla to move back with him!

"Of course I miss you Kris. I happen to think you're great." Kayla admitted. She tried not to blush as she said the words.

"I've missed you too baby. More than you can imagine." Before Kayla could ask what he meant they were driving through the streets of New Roads and pulling into hospital parking.

Kane was praying to the spirits hoping for some sort of miracle when Kayla and Kris walked into the waiting area. Frowning he stood up.

"Hi princess, this isn't exactly your type of scene." Anything to take the sad expression from Kayla's pretty face!

She scowled. "Now is not the time Kano. Can I see her? Is Leeann going to be alright?" Kayla asked.

"I don't know and I wish I did." Kane says sadly. This causing Kris to give him a curious look.

"Why are you still here Kane? I've never heard of you taking an interest in any particular person you've brought in before." Kris stated. Kayla was wondering about that as well.

Kane's frown deepened. He ran his fingers through his hair; the braid coming loose some time ago. "There was something familiar about her. I felt some sort of strange connection. I am so sorry about your friend prin. . . Kayla. If I had the power to stop this I would have." Kane sighed miserably.

Kayla walked over to Kane giving him a hug. He didn't object and hugged her back.

"What was that for?" Kane wanted to know. Never did Kayla show him any affection because she didn't know how he'd react.

"You're as inquisitive as your brother when I hugged him." Kayla commented. "And it looked like you needed it." she added, "so I did."

"We're not omnipotent Kane. It's not your fault that Leeann was in an accident. You couldn't have done anymore than you have." Kris tried to comfort his twin.

"Well, I still feel responsible." Kane replied standing up. "I need some fresh air." he mumbled and headed outside.

"I'll go after him." For some reason even as much as Kane usually tormented her, Kayla could always make him open up.

Kris nodded. "I'll find the doctor attending to Leeann and let him know you're here." he told her.
"Thanks." Kayla placed a quick kiss to Kris's cheek before heading back outside.

Kayla found Kane sitting outside actually in one of the trees. Now he was taking up her habits! Truly weird.

"Room for one more?" she inquired sweetly. Kane nodded.

"If you've come to interrogate me princess don't bother." Kane told her. "Because I cant tell you what it is about your friend. . . Leeann I mean." Kane corrected himself. "I just feel some sort of connection to her. Like we've met before."

"Maybe you have." Kayla shrugged. She knew about Leeann's dreams and Kane's visions. Kane had had them since his childhood. "Only you weren't formally introduced."

"What? Are you trying to tell me this is the woman from my visions?" Kane was curious.
