A strange fascination stirred on a fall evening last year. I had just moved into a new home. I distinctly remember the day I first met Harold. It was a quick hello and brief introductions. Over the next few weeks we got acquainted. We sat and enjoyed each other's company. We shared quiet moments as he continued his visits to my back deck. A bond began to form between two neighbors. Unspoken words of kindness like a gentle breeze floated across this relationship throughout the cold autumn season.
As winter approached and less time spent outside, we drifted apart. Casual hellos announced across our yards were swept away with the blustery winds of winter. I had not given it much thought, but I did notice I missed his company. Once spring cruised in like the dawning of a new day, our time together increased. I had missed his company more than I ever expected to. Spring was in the air and as the birds and squirrels emerged from their winter respite, I too, was excited to once again be breathing in the cool crisp air of a new season. New hopes and new possibilities.
Harold and I spent increasingly more time getting to really know each other. At times we shared a meal and others times, just some time alone. Some days our insomnia seemed to be on the same schedule but my favorite time to share with Harold was early morning. Hot black coffee and beautiful sunrises were never better. I do not seem to be as bold as Harold, as I never seek him out. He always comes to me. I feel like a young girl being wooed by a beau. It is a loving splendid feeling.
Sideways glances from his almond shaped green eyes make me smile and I appreciate the attention he showers upon me. I love you Harold. My heart skips as we become closer and increasingly more comfortable with each other. Summer is in full swing and I have told you of my feelings and emotions. I feared it would send you running but alas, it has not. You are still there for me and always attentive but you have not found the words. I do not believe this love I feel is unrequited. I can see it in your eyes. You are still there my beautiful love. I truly love you and I will wait. I will always be there.
Harold Habing. My mysterious love. Harold Habing my neighbor's cat. I love him and he loves me.
