Lovingly Deficient

Perfectly Imperfect

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

Only the broken
And suffering
Codependent,
Profoundly insecure
Or blindly naive
Would either quest for,
Value or
Believe
That they are with
A perfect person,
For perfection
Was never our
Genetic destiny or
Intended predilection.

For ourselves
And those we love,
We remain deficiently
But predictably
Human
While striving,
If one is so inclined,
To move in the right way
And to do some right things
Which we hope
Self-betterment
And richer humanity
Brings.

Each person is,
In some greater or lesser way,
Bent,
But that does not
Diminish
Their ability to
Give or receive love
Spent.

Perfection is an idea,
Not a final destination.
A guidepost toward
And a vision of
Direction.
It does not take
A profound degree
Of humility
To resonate
With this reflection.

HAL is screwing up a lot of my stuff, too. But I still get the message of your poem and it's SO true. I also think this is one of your best, which is saying a lot since I love everything I've read from you. Also, you reminded of that song by Matchbox 20 called "Bent" which kind of talks about the same thing but not in the positive way you did here.

HAL notwithstanding, this is a wise and wonderful statement... when people realize and accept not only the imperfections of others, but their own as well, and act accordingly with tolerance and understanding, THERE is the beginning of harmony and peace. Well done, my friend!

It would appear that Hal and I have a few things in common. Love this one. You summed us humans up perfectly.

well, this work is near perfect, David, despite "HAL"!

Gotta love HAL for ruining people's post prose. Nice work though.
