Low Calorie Pizza

I Want to Diet and Lose Weight, But Still Eat Pizza

Shawn Monk
The hardest part of being on a diet is saying no to the foods you love. But how do you say goodbye to the foods you love completely? Using the term "diet" will always prevent you from achieving permanent weight loss, you must commit yourself to changing your way of life and your views on food.

I love pizza. A new way of life for me must still include it presence, but the fact of the matter is that a couple of slices of your average pizza will put you quite a ways back on your diet. One slice isn't too bad, but can you eat only one?

The goal is to make an alternative pie that will allow you to indulge in the whole pizza, but could be done for less than a 200 calorie intake.

The base of the pizza is the place were calories can add up the fast. You will quickly see that a thin crust pizza has far fewer calories than it's regular counterpart, and don't even think you will ever be allowed to eat deep dish again and call it diet food.

So to make an under 200 calorie pizza you will have to realize that there will be sacrifices. It will have an inferior base. It won't have an abundance of filler or toppings, but it will give you an alternative to having to just say no completely to the thing you love.

So our base will be half of a pita bread. A 2 oz pita can be cut in half and it will make a 6" base that has only 70 calories. We add a pizza sauce. One 2.2 oz serving of Ragu pizza sauce is only 30 calories. We add an ounce of onions if you like that vegetable topping, or you can choose one you like. The veggie gives a whopping 12 calories. I add oregano and chili, which have no significant amount of calories. Our total calories so far equal 112 calories. One ounce of mozzarella equals 72 calories. We have now completed our pizza at a total caloric cost of 184.

Now put in a toaster oven set too 400 degrees for about 8 minutes or until the cheese is melted. It may not be delivery or DiGiorno, but it will help you when the craving for pizza hits. Eventually you will cave and eat a giant slice of deep dish. The thing is that you won't have to hate yourself, because you will be able to revert back to your easier to maintain diet and counteract the temporary relapse.
