The Cass Scenic Railroad is one of at least a half-dozen railroad lines that offer scenic journeys into the countryside. You can view West Virginia's spectacular fall foliage against the backdrop of numerous mountains or even catch a glimpse of a bald eagle. Most lines feature both air-conditioned first-class cars and open-air sightseeing cars. A round trip usually under three hours and a memorable adventure for small children and adults alike. Expect to pay $20-$30 per adult and about half for children under 12.
In West Virginia its' all downhill. Being the only state in the USA located entirely within the Appalachian Mountains, you can bet that there are mountains galore. Four premier ski resorts are located within the state; Snowshoe Mountain, Canaan Valley, Winterplace, and Timberline. All four can produce artificial snow if mother nature is not co-operating during your visit. Downhill skiing too tame for your teenagers? Extreme sports like snowboarding and airboard inflatable sledding, the latest thing in snow surfing, are also available.
Spring is glorious in West Virginia. A day trip via the many scenic byways is a simple, low cost way to enjoy spring. There are numerous small, friendly towns where you can stop for a bite to eat, maybe sample some ramp dishes, or shop for one-of-a-kind antique treasures. There are many bed and breakfasts to chose from for overnight stays for couples. Those with children may prefer a modern state park cabin with biking, hiking, and rafting available right in your front yard.
While not well-known as a golfers paradise, West Virginia has numerous golf courses. Stonewall Jackson Resort features an 18 hole course designed exclusively by Arnold Palmer. The Lakeview Golf Resort and Spa has two 18 hole courses, the Lakeview and the Mountainview. Imagine a golf course that winds through the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, that is West Virginia style golfing.
Whatever type of vacation you are planning, West Virginia has something that the whole family can enjoy. The friendly, laid-back atmosphere is a refreshing change of pace from most vacation destinations. No long lines, no stressful traffic, just calm, peaceful tranquility that will recharge your batteries. The WV Tourism Council can provide information on any of these activities.
