Low Key New Year's Celebration

Ariana R. Cherry-Shearer
You don't always have to bring on the New Year's with a big bang. It's possible to stay home with a few close friends or family, and celebrate low key. This is especially a plus for those on a low budget or if you don't enjoy big huge crowds (like the ones compared to New York Times Square!). Some look at the holidays as a way to relax, reflect, and spend it with those that you love and care about the most.

To save money on food and snacks, ask the family and friends that you invite to bring over a covered dish or a dessert. For those who wish to have special drinks, have them bring the beverage of their choice. Meanwhile, you can also make a special punch or non-alcholic beverages for those who wish not to drink any alcohol. Set out a table that will feature everyone's dishes and dessert that they brought. Create a special "bar/drink area" that includes beverages along with some nuts and drinks.

After some fun eating and socializing, you then can make some time for entertainment. Bring out some group board games, sing karoke, or sit down and relax with a movie until the big count down begins. For those who wish to be a bit closer to the big ball drop in New York, this celebration can be caught online via Earthcam. Perhaps you all have some fun in your home as you watch all of the people on Times Square. While they will be outside cuddling up, you will be lucky to have the warmth of your home, family, and friends! If you would rather not relax, if anybody has a Wii or other video games, get everyone involved in a video game show or some sports activities. Once midnight strikes, everybody can then begin to quiet down for the evening after the video game cardio.

If your family and friends have children, be sure to make it fun for them as well. Set up a separate room of crafts and art, or even a movie. Make all of the children some ice cream sundaes after dinner, or pop some popcorn to go along with their movies. If you decide to play Wii or play some games, get the children involved as well. For children or couples who may decide to stay over, be sure to have sleeping bags and pillows to make it their own special new years slumber party.

Once midnight strikes, have a special song ready to play to wish each other a happy new year. Have a special couples dance to bring in the new year, or just some time for reflection and joy. Turn up the CD (keep it low if you live near others), and give that special someone a hug or kiss!

Bringing in the new year doesn't always have to mean throwing a big party that will brake the wallet. With the help of family and friends, there can still be plenty of food, fun, entertainment. Staying home or in a group can always be safer, and also give a place for those who need to crash somewhere over night.
