Low-Cost Vodkas Compared

A Review of Burnett's, Skol, Downunder, and Smirnoff Brand Vodkas

James Gapinski
Vodka is often considered a flavorless liquor, but each vodka producer has a unique taste. This is especially true when it comes to low-cost vodkas, since they are not as pure, leading to a harsher, sharper taste. As vodka is a subtle liquor, many opt for lower-cost vodkas, springing for higher quality mix-ins to please the taste buds. But flavor does not need to be sacrificed when choosing a low-cost vodka, if the right vodka is chosen.

Burnett's Vodka:Burnett's Vodka's label boasts that it is quadruple distilled. In theory, this creates a smoother, purer vodka. However, it does not noticeably surpass standard triple distilled vodkas. While Burnett's Vodka is by no means the worst of the low-end vodkas, it is also not the best. It has a harsh burn to it, but the flavor left after the initial sharpness is muted and rather pleasant. Overall, Burnett's Vodka deserves a 7 out of 10.

Skol Vodka: Purchased primarily for its very low price, one doesn't expect much with Skol Vodka. This assumption is well-founded. It is a relatively hard vodka, without much positive taste and a rather sharp edge. It goes well with fruity cocktail drinks designed to drown out the liquor's flavor-it's not a drink to be sipped on its own or in a beverage consisting of heavy vodka content. Skol comes in low at only a rating of 4 out of 10.

Downunder Vodka: Less widely available than Burnett's or Skol, Downunder is a low-cost vodka worth hunting for. It is imported from Australia where it is triple distilled for rather impeccable smoothness and a soothing aftertaste. It's a nice surprise for anybody purchasing a less popular low-end vodka; it definitely deserves a wider audience. Good with just about anything, or even straight-up on the rocks, Downunder Vodka gets a 9 out of 10 ranking.

Smirnoff Vodka: Widely advertised and widely bought, Smirnoff is a safe yet uninteresting choice. It has little depth, but also little burn. The vodka is moderately smooth, earning it a place of 7 out of a 10 point scale, vying for Burnett's Vodka's spot on the ladder.

Considering these four options, Downunder emerges as the best choice for most drinks. Its pleasing taste allows for versatility, able to stand well on its own and not needing specific beverage combinations to dampen any taste imperfections. Burnett's Vodka teeters closer to the high end of 7, with Smirnoff at the lower, making both choices okay for those who don't want to scour supermarkets for Downunder. Skol is a last choice, but still satisfactory for certain beverages. With the know how shared above, even a low-budget event can feature some good-tasting vodka.
