Low-Cost Ways to Exercise

No matter who you are or what your budget, being unable to invest in expensive equipment or a high-priced gym membership shouldn't be what keeps you from exercising. In fact, for little or no money, there are many different options you can incorporate into your life to get the right amount of exercise that is just as effective as going to any gym.

Walking is probably the number one exercise that just about anyone can do. Not only is it low impact, but you can do it almost anywhere! Whether you choose to go for a nice walk in the park, around your neighborhood, or adding more walking into your routine schedule - like walking to work, school, or to the store - you can get a pretty decent amount of exercise for basically free. It is recommended, though, to invest in a good pair of athletic shoes for this, but it's a small investment considering there's really no other costs you have to put into this wonderful cardiovascular exercise.

Moving up from walking, you can also run or jog. Again, its recommended to invest in a pair of athletic shoes, probably even more recommended than it would be for walking, as running is a more impactive exercise. But, like walking, you can do this virtually anywhere. If you've never really been jogging before, it helps to begin by running and walking in alteration - as in, walk for about a minute, then run for a minute, and so on. Each week you would add on a minute's time to the running.

Bicycling is a great method of exercise, as well as transportation. You may even have a bike already, but if not this and a helmet is really all you would need to invest in. In the long run, it will bring you so much more savings in gas or taxi fares if you do use it to get from place to place. Aside from this, it's known to be really fun and relaxing to just about anyone.

Dancing is another fun way to move around and burn calories. You can look into your local community center and join a class if you wish, which generally costs a small amount of money or, sometimes, nothing at all. If you're shy, you can simply dance around your house to music and get a great workout without having to worry about what others are thinking.

Speaking of exercising at home, there are many exercise videos and DVDs available, with all sorts of fitness and aerobics programs to learn and work with - basically, you'll have a fitness class without ever having to leave the house. Most libraries have a selection of videos and DVDs to check out, the fitness category amongst them, but if you wish to do this for the long term, you can easily buy one yourself for less than $20. Stores that sell used movies are also a good bet for low-cost exercise programs.

Also on the home front, if you wish to invest just a little more, you may want to consider video games. No, not the traditional video games, but these days there are some out there that are great for exercising while having a fun time! The Wii game console, for instance, has games you interact with such as tennis, yoga, and even a real exercise program. Other game systems have dancing games that play music to your dance steps, and all of this can equal out to a great workout and, even better, a great way to spend time with your kids.

You may also want to consider lower-priced investments, such as those to do with small, household exercise equipment. Most retail stores have sporting good sections with a whole aisle dedicated to weights, strength training, and more, with modestly-priced equipment such as jump ropes, dumbbells, and resistance trainers.

If you're into sports, it's an obvious way to work out for cheap or freely. Whether on an organized team or just getting together with a group of friends a few times a week, having a decent game of basketball or soccer equals out to good exercising. Or, if you're not into team sports, you can simply shoot some hoops by yourself or hit a tennis ball against the wall.

No matter what you choose to do, as you can see by the above methods listed, there are quite a few ways to be able to exercise without having to worry about spending (or wasting) all your money.
