Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park

Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park is home to some of what the real Florida is all about. Over 15 miles of biking, hiking and equestrian trails are perfect for spending a secluded day in the great outdoors. Canoe and kayak enthusiasts will love the five mile ride from the park to Katie's Landing down the black waters of the Wekiva River. There's even an overnight campground for horseback riders complete with stalls. What ever outdoor adventure you do, you're sure to have a good time at Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park.

One of the most popular outdoor activities at Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park is horseback riding. A local equestrian trail riding group hosts many events at the park and volunteer to help protect the area. One of their recently held events raised enough money to purchase new horse corals on the Fechtel tract of the park. They help up keep the campground with all volunteer labor.

The equestrian campground is unfortunately for those who bring horses in only. They offer first come first serve sites for tents and RV's. Stalls are a first come first serve basis as well. Water is available for horse and a negative Coggins test is required to spend the night. Reservations are required and can be reached at (407)884-2009 for more information.

Katie's landing is a popular spot and recent addition to the few amenities at Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park. It offers a non-motorized boat launch for canoes and kayaks. You can also launch further upstream and float down to Katie's Landing and take out. The state park offers no upper area boat launch as of yet.

Hiking at Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park allows you several options to explore this diverse central Florida habitat. The Sand Hill Nature Trail offers visitors a self-guided trip through the forests on a relaxing 50 minute walk. Access to this trail is directly off of S.R. 46.

All of the over 125 miles of remaining trails throughout the park are all multi-use, so expect to occasionally see a hiker, biker, horseback rider or even park vehicle. Unfortunately there is no overnight camping so beware that the park closes at dusk and you should plan your trip accordingly. Since many trails cross each other, several trip distances can be planned ahead for varying hiking skills.
