Lowering Your Child's Risk of Getting Diabetes

Protect Your Children from Diabetes

Mrs.Rogers
Parents that have Diabetes, can transfer this to their children as well. Children of Diabetic parents have 50% greater risk at developing Diabetes in their lifetime.

As a Diabetic and as a parent, I am constantly aware of the risk my Diabetes has, as well as the risk my children will become a Diabetic , themselves. This makes me aware of the type of food I allow in my kitchen cabinets, and the type of food, I prepare for them.

Type 2 Diabetes is strongly linked to a family, who's history has had person's with Diabetes in it. It is important to be aware of your family history. Maybe you do not have Diabetes, but your Grandparents had it. Or maybe your parents had it. This would almost increase your chances to 50 percent or greater and your child's.

A healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, on a daily basis, and healthy eating habits are essential, these days. Diabetes is on the rise, and over half of school age children are obese, or overweight. Snack machines and vending machines, with soda, can be a bad influence for your child.

Obesity may be a factor for childhood Diabetes, Type 2. Feeding your children a balanced diet, with fruits, and vegetables, and foods low in fat, can help preventive obesity, and illness such as Diabetes. Also encourage your child to join sports, track, or events that require them to exercise. Make them cut the Television off and get outside, (weather permitting). If you have animals, let them walk the animals, outside on a daily basis. That way it would be more fun for them.

Please take an interest in your child's eating habits. Remember, signs associated with Diabetes can be missed. Signs, such as moodiness, sleeplessness and excess hunger, excess thirst. Unexplained fatigue can be misleading in an active child. Most parents would assume that the child has worked out hard, or maybe that the child did not get much sleep, but being tired often means that blood sugars have risen to high.

Get your teen to the doctor's office for a regular check up. This is a perfect time, when Diabetes rares it's ugly head. If you have a child that is at greater risk of getting Diabetes, monitor them closely. Children are too precious, don't take chances with their health. Make a better health plan for them, better mealtimes, and increase exercise.
