Lowering Your Insurance Premiums on Your SUV

Does Driving a Big Vehicle Have to Mean Big Premiums?

Does driving an SUV mean that you are destined to pay more on your auto insurance premiums? Unfortunately, it can. Premiums are calculated based on the likelihood that you will file a claim and just driving an SUV increases the chances.

You feel safer in an SUV, so what gives? Well, although you may feel safer you are actually 3 times more likely to roll over in an SUV than any other type of car. And your high bumpers mean that if you do get in an accident you are likely to inflict more damage on another vehicle than you would in a car.

So, what can you do to keep your premiums in check and still drive the car that you want? I'm here to help!

Shop around. The best way to be sure that you are getting the fairest and lowest price possible for the coverage you want is to shop around. Don't jump on the first offer you receive and your wallet will thank you later.

Keep your record clean. The less black marks on your driving record, the cheaper your insurance. This is true across the board for any car, but since we are looking for ways to keep your SUV insurance premium down it's especially important.

Check your health insurance coverage. If it covers medical costs that you would incur even in the case of a vehicular accident you can set this as your primary coverage with your insurer and save some coin. I did this and it really helped to bring my coverage down to a reasonable level. And after all, you are paying that health insurance premium anyway!

Sure, you may pay a little more in the long run, but these tips can help you hang onto some of your hard earned money. And if all else fails you can always trade your SUV in for a more affordably insured car. No? I don't blame you. I wouldn't either!
