Auto insurance companies charge insurance premiums based on several factors such as:
• Type of vehicles insured
• Type of coverage
• Past driving history
• Area where you drive most
• Place where the vehicle is parked
Insurance companies also offer discounts on the premium if you are affiliated with certain preferred professional organizations, have certain safety features like anti-lock brakes, automatic seat belts, etc. or you are in a low-risk occupation.
The low-risk occupation car insurance discount can be attained only by people in specific occupations, while the other discounts apply to the general public. Insurance companies collect driver records across wide demographics and classify risk based on occupation. In their analysis, they also use information such as average hours on the road and typical time and duration of the drive. Based on their statistics, people in certain professions are considered to be more responsible drivers than others and less prone to accidents - so they qualify for low-risk occupation discounts.
While shopping around for low-risk occupation discounts, you may find that different insurance companies have different policies for qualification based on their statistical models. Usually teachers, engineers and doctors are considered low-risk and may benefit from this discount. Some companies offer this discount to graduate students with a high GPA. Being unemployed could be a disqualifying factor but a stay-at-home mom may get a discount as she is likely to be very cautious while driving. Professions requiring significant night-time driving may be considered risky.
Some insurance companies even collect information on your hobbies to create a risk profile for you based on their statistics. Less aggressive occupations like reading, gardening, etc. seem to lower the insurance quotes.
I have received low-risk occupation car insurance discounts for having good grades as a graduate student and for working as an engineer during my work life. But in my experience, there is no uniformity across the insurance companies in the amount of their discount offers or their criteria for offering discounts. So, when you look for an insurance rate quote, be sure to provide your educational and professional background and ask specifically if the company offers a low-risk occupation car insurance discount.
