LSU Campus to Open Own Brewery? Chancellor Michael Martin Wants to Try It!

Karen Gros
Chancellor Michael Martin of Louisiana State University announced last week that he would like to see a brewery on campus that is run by LSU. He is commissioning to have a business plan drawn up to operate a microbrewery on campus. He also announced that the microbrewery would be housed at the Lod Cook Hotel on the eastern side of campus.

The plan for the microbrewery is to supply all of the functions held at Lod Cook and the restaurant there with an LSU specialty beer or beers that could also be marketed to the surrounding area.

John Finley, who is the chair of the Food Science Department at LSU has already experimented with some formulations that may be produced by the microbrewery.

The focus on the beer formulations will be on a traditional lager, a light beer that will appeal to females, and a dark beer that will be "purple", one of the official LSU colors.

While there are numerous legalities to overcome before the project can began and a newly constructed addition built at Lod Cook to house the operation, all signs are looking good for the new microbrewery to become a reality.

Mockler Beverage Company, who is also an Anheuser Busch distributor has expressed an interest in a partnership with LSU on the new project.

The new brewery would also open up a new course for the Food Science Department's offerings in brewing beer. The department could also be the official operators of the new operation.

If all goes well, the new facility and operations should be up and running in about two years. Here's to the new Tiger brewery....cheers!

Just what every college campus needs! I hope my tax dollars won't be included in any Federal grants to get this thing off the ground...although this is an idea that should have plenty of private backing...

That's interesting. I know Notre Dame pretty much banned alcohol on campus in contrast. It just means students go somewhere else to drink - it doesn't solve any drinking problems.

I think cheap alcohol gets abused more, a microbrewery might be a good idea.

    I'll drink to that!

That's an interesting concept, a campus run brewery.

Anything done to excess is bad. Hopefully, students will learn a skill that may provide them with a career. Hopefully, the school will see some revenue. Hopefully, no one will be injured.

just what they need, more reasons to drink and assume it's ok

    Giving kids a "higher" education.

Good for them if this project can get approval.
