LSU Football Program Under Investigation for NCAA Violations

Athletics Director Joe Alleva has confirmed to the media that the LSU football program is under investigation for possible NCAA violations.

In addressing the media, Alleva had this to say; "Compliance issues are routinely monitored by our compliance staff, and LSU is currently researching possible violations involving one assistant coach and one student-athlete in the sport of football".

Alleval also noted that the Southeastern Conference office has been notified. Although Alleva is not at liberty to mention any names of individuals involved, another source at LSU leaked the name of the assistant coach involved to the media.

D.J. McCarthy is the wide receivers coach for the football team. He has been on the coaching staff since 2007 and is also involved in recruiting. McCarthy coached at UCLA before coming to LSU.

McCarthy is responsible for recruiting Akiem Hicks, a defensive lineman from California and Rueben Randle, a wide receiver from Bastrop, LA for the 2009 class.

McCarthy has several top commitments for the 201o class including Mike Davis and Justin Hunter, both wide receivers.

With the loss of assistant coach Larry Porter, who was offered the head coaching position at University of Memphis just a few days ago, that leaves a big void in the recruiting area.

Herb Vincent, the associate vice chancellor for university relations and the senior associate athletic director, said that Joe Aleva would have no other comments to the media, nor would Les Miles.

The investigation is not expected to have any impact on the season's record since the student-athlete did not play in any football games this season. The Tigers ended the regular season with a 9-3 record.

Karen, this is not surprising. What is surprising is how many times this has occured in the NCAA. When watching NFL lineups before games or at the start of games, I noticed that each player gives their alma mater, the school they came from, yet only 12% of these pros actually graduated from their respective universities. I graduated with a BA & had 2 others, but how can they claim they came from a university that they did not even graduate from?! This seems puzzling to me. Anyway, thanks for the Sports. Now the weather? Just kidding. Thanks. : - )
