The selection to participate in the New Year's celebration is quite an honor as the Miami Dolphin Cheerleaders, NFL mascots, and the University of Minnesota Dance Team were also finalist in the selection process. The groups learned they were selected to participate as they were leaving for a Tiger basketball game in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The LSU Golden Girls and Tiger Girls are one of two organizations in the United States to be asked to participate in the New Year's celebrations which is sponsored by Hong Kong Tourism. The other group is a choir from Ohio. The LSU Tiger Band Director, Roy King, had this to say about the selection, "The Tiger Band and Golden Girls have always served as a gateway to the university. We are proud to continue to serve in this capacity as we represent the United States and the great state of Louisiana. We are fortunate to have a dance group as part of the Tiger Band that operates on the highest level and are honored to serve as ambassadors at the Hong Kong New Year celebration. This is an internationally televised event which holds much significance to our friends across the globe. I hope everyone in Louisiana joins me in celebrating this great honor with the dancers of our university who work so hard to spread spirit in the name of LSU." King also oversees the Golden Girls since they perform in conjunction with the Tiger Band.
This year's parade marks the 16th annual parade and will include highly decorated floats, dragons, clowns, marching bands, lion dancers, international guests, such as the LSU Tiger Girls and LSU Golden Girls, and other performing teams from around the world.
