LSU Remains in First in the BCS
West Virginia Moves into Third, Ohio State Climbs Back into the Top 5
1: LSU, 10-1, BCS Score of .990
LSU once again remains on top of the BCS rankings after coming back from Mississippi with a win. While it appears that LSU may have just about sealed a bid to the National Championship down in New Orleans, this has been a season of upsets. While Arkansas should not pose to be much of a problem against the Tigers, it looks like Georgia will be the SEC East champion. The Bulldogs are certainly capable of playing in what could be one of the best conference championship games this year. It appears though, that Matt Flynn and the LSU Tigers are in good shape going into their last regular season game and, inevitably, the SEC Conference Championship.
This past week: The Tigers beat Ole Miss 41-24.
Next week: The Tigers play Arkansas in an afternoon game on Friday.
2: Kansas, 11-0, BCS Score of .949
Kansas remains as the only unbeaten team in the Top 5 in the BCS rankings, but this could come to a halt soon. While the Jayhawks are unbeaten, their opponent this week, Missouri, is no Toledo, Central Michigan, Southeastern Louisiana or Florida International. The Jayhawks have played legit teams however, but it will be interesting to see how Todd Reesing and Brandon McAnderson do against quite possibly their toughest opponent of the season. A Kansas win this week, however, should not propel the team to the number 1 position in the BCS unless LSU loses. While a win this week would make Kansas undefeated, LSU is a better overall team and has played a tougher schedule.
This past week: Kansas beat Iowa State 45-7 in a home game.
Next week: Kansas serves as the host to Missouri in a Saturday night matchup at Arrowhead Stadium.
3: West Virginia, 9-1, BCS Score of .888
If West Virginia can win their final two games against UConn and Pittsburgh, the Mountaineers should expect to be taking a trip to New Orleans in January to play for the National Championship. West Virginia has somehow managed to fly under the radar to get to where they're at, which is a shot at a national title. While Pat White doesn't throw for 3000 yards in a season like Chase Daniel, his combination of passing and scrambling has been dominant all season. Add Steve Slaton into the offensive mix and you're left with the potent West Virginia offense. Cincinnati threatened all game this past week, but West Virginia showed what good teams do: they overcome problems and get the job done.
The past week: West Virginia beat Cincinnati 28-23.
Next week: Connecticut travels into Mountaineer country for a noon game on Saturday.
4: Missouri, 10-1, BCS Score of .870
Missouri moves into the fourth spot in the latest BCS Rankings, but they just came off of what was a shaky performance this past week against a struggling Kansas State team. Chase Daniel, however, was able to propel Missouri to a victory. Missouri needs to make sure not to let the same thing happen this week when they head to Kansas City to take on the undefeated Kansas Jayhawks. While Kansas is ranked higher in the AP and USA Today polls, it is Missouri that appears to be in position to win this coming week against Kansas. A win for the Tigers is also their only shot at a chance at the Big 12 title game.
This past week: Missouri left Kansas State with a 49-32 victory.
Next week: Missouri heads back into the state of Kansas-this time to Arrowhead Stadium to take on the Kansas Jayhawks.
5: Ohio State, 10-1, BCS Score of .860
The Buckeyes went up to the Big House and showed that they're still a dominant team, despite the loss to Illinois. In the game that Mike Hart and Chad Henne had come back to Michigan for a 4th season for, Ohio State made sure that they came back to Columbus with a victory. Chris Wells was the difference maker in the game, running over the Michigan defense, while Vernon Gholston and the Ohio State defense held Michigan to under 100 yards of offense. With that victory, the Buckeyes won the Big Ten Championship and earned a berth to the Rose Bowl. Now Ohio State sits back and waits for the rest of the season to see where they'll wind up in the polls. With Kansas or Missouri losing due to their game this week and with West Virginia still having a couple conference games left, there's always the possibility that Ohio State could slowly rise back up in an attempt to set the Rose Bowl aside for the National Championship game.
This past week: Ohio State won their biggest game of the season, beating Michigan 14-3.
Next week: Ohio State has won the Big Ten and has concluded regular season games.
Week 13 Game to Watch: #4 Missouri at #2 Kansas, Saturday November 24 at 8pm on ABC
Get the leftovers out from Thanksgiving and settle in Saturday night for a game that features Chase Daniel and his 3500 yards passing against Todd Reesing's 2900 yards passing and Brandon McAnderson's 1000 yards. If you're looking for a low-scoring, poorly played game, you could always watch Notre Dame try to beat the Stanford Cardinal at 3:30pm on ESPN2. Expect this game, however, to feature two of the best offenses and two Heisman contenders in Arrowhead Stadium, in what should be an exciting game. Not only does this game have serious implications on the Big 12 championship game, but after Saturday night, one of these teams will not be in the BCS Top 5 anymore. This game will turn into a shootout fast, with both teams trying to score early and often.
