BATON ROUGE, LA - Les Miles, head coach of the LSU Tigers football team, addressed the media on the afternoon of Saturday, August 20, 2011 to discuss the incident that occurred at an off campus bar in the wee hours of the morning on Friday, August 19, 2011.
Coach Miles took the podium to address the media with 23 members of the LSU football team's "Unity Council" standing beside and behind him. The incident that prompted this media statement involved several members of the LSU football team who were outside Shady's Bar, close to the LSU campus, when a fight broke out. Local and national news picked up the story Friday reporting that senior quarterback Jordan Jefferson was involved in the incident, along with several other members of the LSU football team. The only other name I have heard mentioned in various media outlets of the players involved was T-Bob Hebert. The players involved, including Jefferson, have not been confirmed yet, as the incident is still under investigation.
USA Today reported that four people were transported to a local hospital where they were treated and then released with minor injuries. The Baton Rogue Police Department in a continuing investigation on the incident has not yet made any arrests at this time. It is also still unclear as to what exactly happened, as well as, who was involved in the incident and who was just an innocent by stander.
Coach Miles addressed the media at approximately 1:12 pm today looked stern with reading glasses sliding down his nose. The message he delivered contained an apology to LSU, the community, and to the fans. Miles expressed his personal disappointment in the decisions of team members which led to the incident early Friday morning, which violated team rules, saying that this kind of behavior was totally unacceptable. He next stated that it would not happen again.
Miles also stated that all members of the football team that were involved will be punished fully when the investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department is concluded. In the meantime, those players that are known to have been involved in Friday's incident or that broke curfew, will start on immediate disciplinary action.
Immediately following Coach Miles' statement, a spokesman for the football team's Unity Council took to the stand and apologized for the team as a whole.
Head coach Les Miles then answered a couple of questions from the media, but kept it very short.
