LSU's NCAA Violations: McCarthy Paid Hicks to Come to LSU

Frank Wilson Reported to Fill Larry Porter's Position as Assistant Coach

The news has hit the media in the Baton Rouge area that LSU's football program did indeed violate NCAA regulations. After an internal investigation was started after the LSU-Arkansas game, the dirt started to wash to the surface.

It appears that Assistant Coach, D.J. McCarthy and student-athlete Akiem Hicks were the center of the investigation. Now that things are out in the open, the investigation alleges that coach McCarthy, running back coach, for the Tigers paid Akiem Hicks to join the LSU football team.

Apparently, this information became known to several team members after the LSU-Arkansas football game and led to an internal investigation. LSU in turn informed the SEC conference office since the offense concerned breaking NCAA rules.

The violation will not cause LSU to forfeit any football games from the current season because Akiem Hicks did not play in any games. However, the eligibility of Hicks is now questionable.

NCAA rules state that if you take money to play the sport, you are not an amateur. Only amateurs are allowed to play in the NCAA.

This leaves us to the question of what will be the fate of Assistant Coach D.J. McCarthy? Apparently, he will not stay around long enough to get the ax because rumors have it that he is leaving town with Larry Porter, who was named the new Head Coach of the University of Memphis Tigers this past weekend. Porter was the Assistant Coach for the running backs on the LSU team.

It has also been announced by several media sources that Frank Wilson will be taking Larry Porter's place as Assistant Coach for the running backs at LSU. Wilson is the wide receivers coach at Tennessee, who also has excellent recruiting skills. He has experience coaching both wide receivers and running backs. Wilson is originally from New Orleans, LA.

I think that as long as there is big money involved in athletics, scandals such as this one will continue to surface. I'm not a big fan of the whole jock-culture thing, partly because these things happen.
