Lt. Watada is Not a Hero

Watada Refuses to Go to Iraq

Crystal
The court martial of Lt. Watada is underway now at Fort Lewis, Washington. If you are not familiar with the situation, this Lieutenant refused to go to Iraq while claiming the war is illegal.

No one in his or her right mind likes war. It is a needless waste of lives, finances, time, and land. There is no purpose to it. Especially the war in Iraq, which has been covered in controversy from the beginning. Why do we fight for other countries when our own is so distraught? Why do we financially fuel foreign battles when we cannot finance battles within the U.S.? It makes absolutely no sense.

The United States has problems of our own that are not being dealt with. Katrina victims and the accompanying region are left to hang. There is still so much work to be done here, yet what are we doing? Leaving our own citizens left struggling and hopeless.

Watada has the right to express his disapproval for a war that he believes is illegal. That is a right found in our Freedom of Speech Amendment. The Constitution, which contains the Five Amendments, is the foundation of the United States. Throughout the years, soldiers in the military have been defending our country and the foundation that it stands for.

Watada deserves to be imprisoned, or worse. He disobeyed a direct legal order. Would we have the foundation of our great country, if people like Watada would not fight to defend it? Where would our country be if any of the World War I, II, Korean, or Vietnam soldiers refused to fight? So many times our freedom is taken for granted. We have our freedom due to our veterans fighting for our country. Watada, obviously, does not think this applies to him.

As far as I know, Watada voluntarily enlisted in the military. What kind of idiot volunteers for the military without thinking they will not have to defend our country? It is infuriating to think he may get away with it.

Soldiers are expected to fight for the honor of their country. That is the purpose of being in the military. Supposedly, they are proud to be in the military with the purpose of defending their country. Does Watada think he is above that? Obviously, he does.

If Watada is acquitted, it will set an awful example to the rest of the military. The Armed Forces as we know it might as well just shut down. Any time a future war comes around (and there will always be a war), soldiers will be refusing deployment left and right. Taxpayer dollars will be wasted defending these evaders who use our court system as a way to prove their point. Who will fight for our country? Who can honestly say they want to be shot, be wounded, be disabled to life, or be killed? No one, that is who. It is a sacrifice that proud soldiers have made since the United States became a nation.

Convict Lt. Watada for longer than four years. That is not long enough. He deserves life imprison (at someone else's expense).

What the hell did he think would happen if he joined the army after 9/11. If his unit had not been deployed, he would still be in the army. He will regret this, when he is 85 years old looking back wishing he had served his country instead of running from responsibility. Old saying in the army is "It's not for me to wonder why but to do and die."

A nicely written article and good use of the first amendment which is part of what he is honor-bound to uphold.
However, the order for him to fight could not have been legal in the face of a war that has been proven time and again to be illegal.

you are wrong on a critical point, soldiers do not have the right to speak out under the first amendment, that right is superseded by the Uniform Code of Military Justice. And you say no one in their right mind likes war...I would argue that many do...our President included...you have some good points, but I must also say-good luck, Lt Watada....

Marie B., I recommend you look up the concept of disobeying an unlawful order, and how a soldier has an obligation to do so.

The efforts of the United States in Iraq do not reflect any desire to defend this country. Iraq was no threat and is no threat to us. As a matter of fact, to my knowledge the only war ever fought to defend this country or its freedom was the American Revolutionary War. Good luck to Lt. Watada.
