It was almost my 9Th birthday in may of 1997. It was a beautiful day in Seattle. That is where I was born and raised and were I was living at the time. My dad wanted me to go along with him to go look for cars on Pacific Highway in Des Moines. He always went up there because they had the best used cars for a good deal and we he was looking for a used car.
We had looked at probably 10 different places and my dad still had not found a car that he liked so instead of giving up he figured we could go get something to eat and take a break. Plus this would give him time to think about all the cars he saw previously and maybe he would convince himself to buy one of those. He asked me where I wanted to go to eat lunch and ofcouse like every 8 year old boy, I said McDonald's.
So McDonald's it was. My dad didn't always take us kids out to eat but since it was just me and him and he was starving from getting up early to look at cars and walking around all over the place up and down Pacific Highway he figured it would be okay to go this once. And boy was I glad he did.
When we arrived at McDonald's we ordered our food and went to sit down. My dad said I could go and play in the playpen there if I wanted to but I said no I just wanted to spend time with my dad that day.
We were eating our food and talking well mostly my dad was talking about the cars and that's when I noticed a man next to us who looked a bit suspicious. He had sun glasses on and we were inside and even though it was a nice day it wasn't too bright out. So I asked the man why he had his sunglasses on.
Before he could reply my dad told me to not talk to strangers and to eat my food. Well that's when the man took his sunglasses off and replied " I am hiding". My dad heard that and turned around to see what the guy was talking about and why he was talking to his 8 year old sun. And that's when we both realized who it really was.
Ken Griffey Jr. Both of our favorite baseball player. The man whose debut with the Seattle Mariners was a month and 12 days before I was born. Even at 8 years old I had known everything there was to know about this man.
We were both star stuck. We didn't really know what to say other then Hello and nice to meet you and "OMG you are my favorite player". He told us that he gets spotted every time he goes out in public and I believe it. He was the biggest thing in Seattle at that time.
After chatting with him for a bit about the Seattle area and the Mariners baseball team he then told us to write down our names and give them to him. He took our names so he could give us a call later with free tickets to come see him play and meet more of the Mariner players such as Jay Buhner and Randy Johnson.
This was by far the best day of my life.
