Nodar Kumaritashvil 21, a Georgian luger has died in training hours before the official start of the Olympics.

Kumaritashvil lost control of his sled, went over a wall, and slammed into a unprotected metal support beam. Observers say his sled was traveling near 90 mph. He was rushed to the local hospital, but it was obviously too late.

IOC President Jacques Rogge said his organization is "in deep mourning" over the death of the Georgian luger and his death "casts a shadow over the games."

"I think they are pushing it a little too much," Australian's Hannah Campbell - Pegg told the Associate Press on Thursday, after she nearly lost control in training.

According to Whistler - Outdoors. Com - "The sport of Luge racing is not for the weak of heart. Imagine lying on your back and hurtling down an ice covered track on a very small sled. If that wouldn't get a persons blood flowing, nothing would."

Kumarithavili was clocked at 89:44 mph just before losing control as he exited what is called "Thunderbird Turn."

It has left some questioning was it due to the track. I question the sport itself leaves to question the sanity of the person who participates and the safety of the sport
