Luke 12:31: But Seek the Kingdom of God and All These Things Shall Be Added to You

Commentary on Luke 12:31

Hartley Engel
"But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you."

-Luke 12:31

What is that you want in life? Do you seek after fame, fortune, or power? What is your passion? What do you live for? If it's not the kingdom of God, then all the other things you seek after (even if they are good things) will lead to failure, frustration and emptiness. If you trust in Him, the Lord promises to give you what you need.

Many people think that having a lot of money is the answer to all their problems. "If I only had more money, I wouldn't have a care in the world," someone once said to me. But nothing could be further from the truth. John Wesley said that "money is a wonderful servant, a terrible master and an abominable god."

Unless you first seek the kingdom of God, all other pursuits are like money - which is to say they are abominable gods; they are counterfeit gods. It's not about you and your selfish pursuits. It's not about putting your kingdom first. Greg Laurie says that you cannot pray "Thy Kingdom come" until you first pray, My Kingdom go." We all have a God-shaped hole in our hearts and only God can fill it and thus satisfy our deepest cravings.

Simply put, you seek the kingdom of God by repenting of your sins and placing your trust and faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels;
and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

Matthew 16:24, 26-27
