I had never heard of Luke Bryan previously, but now I have listened to his album "Doin' My Thing." I guess I know what his thing is now. Luke Bryan definitely has the voice for country music, but he might need to do something in the creative department to standout. My song by song notes for "Doin' My Thing" are below.
"Rain Is A Good Thing": A song that ultimately is about how country folk need rain and how fun rain is. Need it to grow corn, need corn for whiskey, and need whiskey to get girls drunk and wanting to do the sex thing. Musically and vocally a pretty tight mix, just kind for stupid for lyrical content.
"Doin' My Thing": Luke Bryan a strong country song voice, but this song is a lazy showcase for that. I guess anyone could, but I think girls should be more inclined to sing along to something like this, "just doin' my thing, just floating on the breeze."
"Do I": A ballad in which a man wonder whether or not he still is enough for his woman. Solid, but boring.
"What Country Is": Explaining what being "country" is or what country music is seems to be a popular anthem for this genre of music. Eventually they all feel like sell outs trying to play to the hand of marketing as opposed to really trying to express pride in ones state of life songs.
"Someone Else Calling You Baby": A song about giving a girl space and thinking she has a new man and wondering whether or not he should still fight for her or is someone else calling her baby now? A good single, and overall catchy song that covers the subject matter with all the right notes.
"Welcome To The Farm": Doesn't really work for me, vocals were as odd as the lyrics in a bad, non-interesting way.
"Apologize": A cover of the song made popular by the band One Republic. A weird, bad cover, really bad. Luke Bryan trying to hit the high notes is like a slapstick comedian pretending to get hit in the crotch while singing.
"Every Time I See You": A track that would easily get lost in a stack of other country tracks. The same could be said about most country music though, so Luke Bryan fans get a decently put together song here, whereas I just hear background noise, that I'll turn off when I notice what it is.
"Chuggin' Along": Generic country music meets "hang in there" motivational poster. Blah.
"I Did It Again": An almost ballad song about doing something kind of stupid, but then doing it again because that's what country boys do. Actually, you could interpret this offensively. Is he "not a quitter" or is he "stupid?"
"Drinkin' Beer and Wastin' Bullets": Nice musical groove, nice pacing, his voice suits it, lyrically I could see my own hunting father enjoying it.
Overall, nothing Luke Bryan should be ashamed of with the album "Doin' My Thing." It is solid enough as genre fare to be untouchable by critics in my opinion; which could also be considered a bad and mediocre thing, but I'm not saying that exactly, because that would be critical and contradictory to what I just said.
