Lullabye

April Fox
we all have cracks in our
shiny clean outsides
we glue them together with
duct tape and spit and we
cover them tightly with
burlap and satin and dress them up
make them like
something we need

we are patchwork, dents
damaged goods
bargain-bin lovers
we turn in our graves long before
we are dead and the long, soulful mourning
of people who loved us
the keening cries sound upon closer inspection
like lullabies
rocking our psyches
to sleep.
